Several years ago, my son dragged me to a Metallica concert, and I thought that I had seen the end of life as we know it. Don't get me wrong, I saw a lot of rock 'n roll shows in my day, but I'm sure glad that I grew up before Heavy Metal came around. The band, if you want to call them that, seemed to only know one chord. Indeed, the crowd went hysterical after the guitarist played a second chord after hitting the same one for what must have been three hours.

The Allman Bros or SRV they ain't.

Besides, you ain't gonna have time to go to a stinkin rock 'n roll show. Just watching Franco go will wear you out. :)

    Looking forward to it, Dale

    DrTax,

Metallica plays really advanced music, so that one chord **** doesn't hold water. :) Kirk Hammett is one of the best lead guitarists in the world and plays some impressive solos. actually they don't use power chords that much. They do a lot of riffs, and they are good at it. :)

    ---

Take a band like Green Day, Good Charlotte or Linkin Park. That's bands that doesn´t know more than one chord.

sorry jonas, as a profesional guitarists who has played all styles of guitar for 35 years, i can tell you kirk hammitt is an average guitarist at best....they music is very simple.... i have 4 of their cds and i actually like listening and playing their music but is it very simple musically.... kirk is actually a much better song writer and power cord player than a pure lead guitarist... i can teach my students most of metallicas guitar riffs after 1 year of playing... what makes metallica stand out as a hard rock band is their excellent sound and production...they are not muscial virtousos by any stretch...ask any professional musician....

Well, I am registered on 3 different music boards, and on every board people agree. Petrucci, Hendrix, Clapton, Vai, Vaughn, Hammett, Johnson and Satriani and maybe Santana are among the worlds best guitarists. And I myself play a little guitar. Kirk Hammett is not average. :)

Btw, Kirk doesn't write the music, so I would like to know where you got that info from? :)

And, you are right, There riffs are simple. But I dare you to name me a band who has made cooler riffs than James Hetfield. That man is the master of Riffs. Listen to the riff in "master of puppets" - "Fade to black" - "Blackened" - "Battery" - " Seek and destroy" - Simple riffs, but brilliantly put together in and harmonic way. My response was to the guy who said they knew only one chord. It was only to prove, that Metallica is exactly the opposite of one chord :D

    testacojones,

Register here, http://www.metallica.com/metontour/tours.asp, and watch the video from Calgary, March 24 in the Saddledome. Watch him play the solo in "Dyers Eve" and come back and say he is a crappy player again. Truly amazing.

I dont need to watch the video he is a crappy guitar player, You should listen to Jason Becker or Tony Macalpine or Vitalij Kuprij, Vinnie Moore, Greg Howe, Yngwie Malmsteen, Georgo Bellas, those are some of the best electric guitar players in the world. I play this kind of music and my guitar playing level is virtuoso, trust me when I tell you that he is nothing in the guitar not even the lessons he had from Satriani helped him, he is got a weak left hand, his fingers are stiff to a point that he can't play not even a 3 note broken chord, his sweep picking sucks and he isn't good not even at alternate picking. All you have to do is listen to Jason Beckers Perpetual Burn CD and you will trully understand what I mean, and let me tell you Kirk Hammet cannot play any of the tunes of the players I just told you, he couldn't play not even 3 seconds of a difficult measure of music of Jason Becker and if I knew him I would bet this against him with my life. To tell you even better he cannot play what I play, I would destroy him in a guitar contest in a matter of 5 seconds if not less.

Back when I first started playing at age 15, I thought Hammet was god on guitar...until I discovered Satriani, Vai, Becker...

But still, Metallica is one of my favorite bands (great driving music for the twisties :D), and they put on an awesome live show!

BTW, I'm fairly new to posting here, so a big "Hello" to everyone. I'm just a college student dreaming of F-car ownership some time down the road...

    Cheers

The more I listen to current music, the more appealing classical music becomes.

More importantly, I'm not going to take musical advice from someone that doesn't even have 12 euros to spare for the rest of the month because they bought a new TV.

Last year, the French Quarter Classic was at the same time as some big motorcycle event, which made for a very interesting and fun night during the Bourbon Street black tie ball...

i know John; albeit, not too well, we're not brothers or anything, but i think i know him enough to, at the very least, SUSPECT that he planned this year's event for JUST for the wild night that'll ensue in the French Quarter... :)

What an obvious lie. It is utterly impossible for people on one internet board, much less 3 different boards, to agree about anything.

The music I am talking about is called neo classical or neo classical fusion rock. Also Vai and Satriani do not fit into this category but they have the skill for it. I don't listen to anything but this or classical music or the real flamenco. Pablo Casals was a personal friend of my father so much that my father had keys to his house, also I grew up around a first violin player who wanted to switch me to the violin do to my natural fretboard skills.

Then how come I have never heard of you? Why aren't you a famous guitar god? Why are you not in the ranks of EVH,Satch,Vai, etc? Kirk Hammet is a good player, for what he concetrats on, he was not voted most valuable player for nothing. He is not a classical guitarist he does not need to be. He is very good at his genera of music. This cannot be denied.

Alex Skolnick is a much better player than Hammet. Also if you really knew about guitar players then you wouldn't use mags postings about most valuable player and crap like that. They can only full the fans and masses but never a trained ear or a truly dedicated player. Check out Shrapnel Records and you will thank me in your silence.

I know people that play Paganini in the violin and aren't famous, for example I have friends that play Beethoven and Choppin in the piano and just because they aren't famous do you think that Yanni is better than them? You must be crazy. I am not famous because I didn't need to join a band to make money, I bought my first Ferrari at 19 so money was not an issue in my life, I play music because is a part of my life, I was born into it. I don't even know why I'm putting myself in this situation talking about Kirk Hammet or about music with you or anyone who doesn't play an instrument to its full potential. All I was trying to do is give credit where credit goes and thats why I wanted to let any person that thinks that Kirk Hammet is great that they are wrong. If you care to be corrected and not be ignorant about this whole thing then check out some of the players I mentioned earlier. What really counts for me is that I and all those that know me or that have listened to me play is that I am in the same league with Malmsteen,Macalpine,Jason Becker,Al Dimeola,Vai,etc. I am not famous but I am for real.

Satriani gave some lessons to Hammet but that was a long time ago. Vai gave lessons to Zappas son but that didn't help much either.

I know excatly who you are talking about and I have the albums. Yes they are better players. But my point is the Kirk is good at the music he chooses to play. Yes the songs are simple in structure and compsition..but many artists including Stach and Vai have said that the simplist songs are the most difficult to write and sound good. Yes their use of chourding is repeditive..but that is what sells.

Were is Malmsteen, today? He died out very fast which is a testiment to his music. Obviously Kirks music is much, more popular and well knowen then Malmsteen's. As a matter of fact Malmsteen stole most of his stuff from EVH, who stole most of his stuff from classical players ( two handed tapping and tapped artifical harmonic's) But he did take it to the next level.

Next thing your going to tell me is the Hendrix sucked aswell. I play aswell but obviously not a good as you. Satch is an amazing player aswell, but he really did nothing to change the face of guitar playing..not on the level of EVH or Hendrix.
