A friend of mine has built up a nice collection of muscle cars, vettes, and hot rods. He builds them from the worst pieces of crap you've ever seen. He can afford to start with much better pieces, but he loves the challenge. We were sitting around bsing about what he should build next, and he said he wanted to go for something different. I suggested doing a 288 GTO replica, he came back with the idea of "rescuing" a Katrina flood car. I thought he was nuts, but a few days later he showed me the numbers and his plan. What he wants to do is get a newer Ferrari 360, 430, 550, or a Lambo Gallardo, Diablo, or Murci, that was in Katrina or the floods. Then he would strip everything out. Then start with the bare shell, rebuild engine, transmission, and suspension. Then for everything else he would purchase from ebay and dismantlers. He feels that since he can do everything himself, that it should come in around 75 to 100K, and take about 6 to 9 months. As he ran the numbers, he half convinced me, because I've seen what he's done with the other cars, but I am on the fence. There is not a resale issue because he can afford to keep everything he builds. So what do you guys think?

If your friend is so talented why not buy an old Ferrari that needs to be totally rebuilt and do that. If he is not going to sell it he will have done something good for the F-car community and himself. There are too many chop jobs running around already. Who needs one more fake?
    That's my take on it.

How would it be a fake?, his original idea was a 288Gto but then decided about rebuilding a 360, well thats how I read it

    Two thoughts:

    1) He may want to research part prices. The later model Fcars have a lot of electronic pieces that would need replacing at $$$$.

    2) A car with a flood salvage title would meet massive market resistance if he ever tried to sell it, regardless of the repair work done. The car won't sell for anything near undamaged prices

I seriously doubt he can get one for that cheap, to be perfectly honest. Flood cars still seem to get a (relatively) pretty penny, and parts are NOT cheap.

Since this was brought up, does anyone know how many Ferraris were destroyed/damaged by the flooding and such?? My understanding is that almost all cars that were in the area are going to have warnings on the titles or something to that effect.

Secondly, does anyone know the approximate prices for any of those Ferraris that were in that area?? Seems like it could possibly be a feasible entry point for some new owners?? I personally would consider owning one, as I would likely never sell my Ferrari (once I get one). Just as I would never sell my Trans Am, etc...
