I have a Series I 400i (without the roof console). The rear courtesy light doesn't work correctly. I'd like to fix it or replace it but I can't figure out how to get it out and I also can't find a replacement. The front light has three positions. It only works in one position and I can't seem to figure out how to get it so that it turns on when the door is opened. I would like for the front and rear to come on when either door is opened. Any help is appreciated.

Daren I can't remember the proper position on a series 1 cars. Send a PM to Aidan, he'll set you straight.

Daren, I'm pretty sure yours would be the same as on my 400 and as I recall the whole lamp inc. surround just clips out from the edge with your fingernails. I've done this a few times as mine only illuminates dimly when I manually swivel it to the on position - it works fine when the door opens so it's a minor earth or power problem which I haven't got round to fixing yet.

Assuming yours is the same as mine the glove box light is an identical unit which has very little use so try swapping that over for one of your faulty ones. You'll probably be able to get the faulty one to work back in the glove box as it's only ever on when the box is open and there's only one simple switch to contend with.

Thanks for the info - very helpful. Do you know which position the front light needs to be in to come on when a door is opened? Front (towards the windshield), straight down, or toward the interior of the car?

That depends on the way that the light was fitted back into the aperture as it can go in either way round. Doesn't matter really, the light isn't really directional.

plus my 400 doesn't have a front courtesy light - probably something to do with when the sunroof was fitted many moons ago !

I just looked at mine - just noticed my rear courtesy light doesn’t work either! No sign of any clips or screws. It is probably just a push fit.

The front one (above the driver's door - mine has a sunroof too) has a rather brittle looking switch that slides. I don't want to fiddle too much, but I think it is just two positions.

Mine doesn't have a light on the side, just one if front and in back. The "switch" is the lens itself as it toggles - no actual slider-type switch.

Which is the same as mine. And probably most early 400 and series 1 400i's.

Not sure about the 412 though.

In my series 1 the lenses are pretty fragile. I figured out that they rocked to turn on (they were always off previously) and while messing about I broke one of them...Winter repair #26
