Anyone have a good and reasonably priced shop in the LA area for a front bumper respray? Do they remove it to paint it? I was quoted $1,500 which seemed high for just the bumper.

I can have my shop do it if all else fails. Shop is in the valley. Remember the Ferrari Glasurit paint is really expensive. The cost of all materials have gone up. You get what you pay for. Consider that you need to match the paint, buy the materials, which include the prep, paint, thinner and clear and I have only used Glasurit to achive perfection. $1500 is not that bad but for Fchatters we'll work someting out.

you could always try it yourself and see how it comes out.

$1500 for the bumper is about right if you want it to match

plus your in Cali so they have to use water bone paint if I'm not mistaken.

The cost to use water borne paint is passed to you the customer.
Along with all the rules the guys in Cali have to abide by because of EPA.

That's a ripoff and the only reason it costs that much is you take the bumper with the car in.

Take it off yourself and walk it in; have them match to a color that is already on the bumper. I bet you cost will be 1/3 of your 1500.

$500 to paint a carry-in bumper at Maeco or one of the other low end, high volume shops is possible.

Not going to be that cheap at Premier or any of the other places that do show quality work. Prep and color match make all the difference as said above.

To the OP, you should also ask Scott at Hot Rods and Hobbies in Signal Hill for a quote.

Paint and materials is going to be $200. Do you really think you can prep, prime, base coat, clear coat, color sand and buff for $300 at a quality shop? I've been doing paint work since '65 and I would touch it for $500. Now, if you just want me to hit it with 600 paper, put down a couple of coats of color and then a few coats of clear I'll take your $500.

actually...$1500 is a rip off. I inquired, because I was curious as to what prices are in SoCal..im not familiar with this area. I used to be the production manager at one of the BEST body shops (for high end cars) in the Midwest. Body hourly rates should be set by geographical region...and they're always less than mechanical rates.

Im not sure what the book calls for time to remove the bumper, but it can't be more than an hour or two. you have to apply the body rate here, not mechanical rate. All said and done, it should not be more than $800-900 if you took the car in. if you brought the bumper to them, then even less.

you people are idiots if you've come to accept that kind of money to have a bumper resprayed. ...and even at the rates I quoted, youd be looking at Standox paint at a show quality level of finish.

How long ago was this used to be the Manager?

I am also a Body man and if he wants it to be done right and he is dropping off the car to them I can see California being that expensive.

Perhaps you just were charging to low of a price.

Today I can't see it being under a Grand unless he pulled the bumper and installed it himself but really is that how we color match panels??

I had a rear bumper respray on my 997 (that's a big body panel!), it was $1200 in SoCal. they did everything, pulled bumper, sanded, sprayed, cleared, waxed, reinstall.

vendor was Mulholland Motorsports on Pico.

I left in '09...so im looking at 4 year old numbers. Im from Indiana...been in California for 3 years. I understand California has lots of BS environmental fees and whatnot. My shop specialized in Mercedes and Porsche, with an occasional exotic.

Craig above agrees with my $900 estimate...FastCars is one of the pre-emptive shops here in SoCal. They do Concours-winning quality work

I'm guessing for these prices, it's worth the price of some film (3M) to protect it afterwards. Not sure what it would cost to do just the lower bumper.

I have 3M on mine. Came on the car when I bought it. Not a mark on it in 3 years.

    Just a thought.

repainted my entire car including color change for 8k and they did a spectacular job at Lancia in Montreal. I would have a hard time spending 1500$ on just a bumper???

I did paint work in my late teens....I'd never do this work for less than $1500.00.

I can't imagine how some think this is overpriced.....

and not to knock your work in your teens, but I seriously doubt you knew what you were doing back then. $1500 is too high....because it is. do you think the rest of the car should cost $30K for a paint job? a pro shop has no reason to charge that much for just a bumper. there's no tricky trim being removed, no surfaces that are tough to form. a fiberglass bumper is as easy as it comes to do body work on. paying $1500 for this is crazy.

...my old roommate...a rocket scientist for NASA, plowed over a raccoon in his Toyota. cracked his front bumper cover. I glassed it, primed and painted, cleared, wet sanded, buffed, and polished it for less than $150 in paint and materials. I didn't charge him for my labor. a bumper is a bumper. His was easy...it was white, and non-metallic, so I had absolutely no color matching to do, but still.

just because it's a Ferrari doesn't mean it has to be expensive.

No your right it doesn't have to be expensive and really any painter worth his salt should be able to produce "show winning paint"

Yknow as well as I do when doing this majority of the cost is the product used.

I haven't prices paint lately since I have been working overseas but depending on the year if you want to same pant its Glasurit or PPG.

I just figure if your taking it to a high end place in Cali your going to pay a little more just because of that. Even if they do farm out the body work to another shop. They will get their piece of that pie.
