I recently dinged the "lip" of my front bumper 2001 550 pulling into the local Starbucks for some early morning joe. It's the black bottom most aspect of the bumper. Any suggestions on what to do? Should I take to my local Ferrari dealer and swap out a new part, or repair at a local body shop? Any advice other than leave the house only after having a first cup of coffee?

search for front bumper threads there are a ton of them. i fixed mine twice and even replaced with a 575 clip thinking i'd have more clearance. scraped it in my parking garage the first time i drove it to work! my advice: drive it and enjoy it, fix it if you ever want to sell it, it will happen again.

Robert- They are just fiberglass and can be repaired by any good body shop. If you take it off yourself and take it to them, it will cost even less and you will know how something else on your car works.

    Has a long nose, no?

They are not fiberglass, I forget the actual name of the material but a competent body shop will or should know.

It comes off remarkably easily, but it is heavy so watch out for that. I took mine off in less than an hour. Unplugging the marker lights was the hardest part.

Right, Dave. It's a composite material.

Crud, fiberglass is a composite material. So is plywood. What exactly is it?

Terry, I think it's Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS). I'll check on that.

Barry- Plastic, then. Corvettes are FRP, which is fiberglass reinforced plastic.

The spoiler is part of the bumper which is a bit too flexible to be fiberglass. The composition of the spoiler portion differs from the rest of the bumper as it's stiffer. It's still plastic. It's repaired with resin fillers, sanded and repainted.

Take heart, Robert. Mine once looked like this before it was repaired...

I just repaired mine.. had a few hair line cracks and a chip on the drivers side.. I ground out the cracks and there definetly was a resin gelcoat on the lip portion. All in all and easy fix and about 4 hours work including paint.

    Best, Robert

Thanks for the welcome and all the advice. I love the fun around the nuance in the discussion. This was my first time in a chat room actually. I was slightly intimidated not knowing the, "crowd" I was about to engage. Not so bad. My impression is that the "Ferrari guy" truly is an affectionato of fine things, yet is not captive to his car. The 550 is my first Ferrari. Prior, I had the Maserati Cambiacorso Coupe- nice car but not the same. I work to live, and live to drive. The 550 makes life exciting and it's refreshing to meet via this chat room a bunch of similar people.

Robert- Welcome and the good news is the bumper is easily repaired. The bad news is a new bumper would be ~$6K and used ones are $2-4K, so fixing them is definitely the way to go.

Incidentally, go to this website and you can download 550 owners manuals and put one on your hard drive. Easier than having to go to the car to look up something. They have a 550 WSM, too, but someone said Vol 1 was corrupted.
