recently brought my ferrari to a mechanic for hard non working brakes. after replacing all brake lines i was told the car had ceased front calipers and they needed to be rebuilt. Then i get another call saying the calipers were tough to get apart and they were cracked. Now i need new calipers. has anyone ever heard of these calipers cracking? if they were cracked before i believe they would have leaked. am i wrong? Thanks for any input

my 79 uses the same caliper (ATE) as a Porsche 911. I cracked one of mine and spent 100.00 on a used 911 caliper.

Sounds like that person cracked them trying to get them apart.
and yes they would have leaked if they were cracked originally.

I have never heard of the brake calipers cracking. The rubber seals and dust boots will crack with age, but the caliper bodies are very robust, and would take a huge amount of force to cause them to crack. Where did they crack?

They may have cracked the bolts that hold the 2 halves together in trying to separate the 2 halves, but if your mechanic is a butcher anything's possible and they could have cracked the housings
Rebuild parts and calipers are available from Superformance in the UK, the ATE caliper was also used on many early 70's Alfa's but the Ferrari uses a spacer between the caliper halves as the Ferrari uses a thicker disk rotor.

thanks for the inputs...i agree. i think they were cracked being taken apart. especially when i was told it took a lot of force to get them apart. i havent seen the cracked calipers yet. The new ones however are costing me $495 each.

Gentleman, to clarify, This car has sat for a while, and the front calipers were frozen, and rusted. The only way to remove the pistons out of the caliper castings is to pressurize the calipers, first with compressed air to have the pistons move outward. If that doesn't work, gentle heat is applied to thermally expand the castings, and more air pressure is applied. If that doesn't work, then the caliper is filled with fluid, and then a pump is attached to the caliper, and hydraulically the pressure is increased to a point where the piston will move. In this case, the left side pistons moved successfully with hydraulic pressure, with no adverse affects, but the right side caliper housing cracked with the pressure applied. It's unfortunate, but I know of no other way to dismantle the calipers. The only other option was to not try to save the calipers, but just automatically tell the customer he needs two replacement calipers. By attempting to dismantle and rebuild, monies were saved.

    Gary,

Might touch base with jim400i here.....he has come across some brake/suspension items recently.

I know as I bought some spare front/rear brake rotors, to hang on the garage wall until I needed them!

It seemed to me he had calipers and 308 suspension bits at that time.

You could always drill into the pistons and slide hammer them out!
Sounds like some heavy moisture in 'da fluid there......

the end result for the front calipers on my 308 was a charge for two rebuilt calipers parts and labor, of which one was broken by the mechanic. A $500 dollar charge for a new/used caliper plus anothe $100 for the core charge. What started out to be a $600 bill for two rebuilt calipers ended up being around $1600. If i had it to do over again i would have sent all four calipers to PMB performance. Front calipers would have cost $220 and the rears $325. Thats completely disassembled, cleaned, new everyting...plus they will stand behind their work and not charge you if they brake one of the calipers trying to disassemble. They are currently building up my rear calipers.
