I was informed by the new car manager at my dealership that in 2007 front end styling on all new cars is being mandated to be more blunt and upright. He stated that the government is doing so to better protect pedestrians struck by cars. He proudly stated that the Scions already passed the new regulation. For those that have missed the Scion....the front end on these cars are butt-ugly.

Has anyone heard such news? I am not sure I can swallow this stuff. Wouldn't this be the end of lovely Corvettes, Ferrari's, Lambo's, and even the new Mustang?

Please tell me my new car manager is full of sterco.

This will affect vehicles being sold in the US... look at the new XK8 for one example, Ford is making the car legal the EU and over here, I would look to other manufacturers to be doing the same thing. Too early to tell but I bet thats what most will be doing.

Gack, and I thought this would be a mandate to make the front ends actually look GOOD! :(

I'm starting to panic imagining a Ferrari with a tall blunt front end. This will be a challenge.

It is true that there will be pedestrian protection standards for production vehicles. The Europeans are going to require these standards followed by the Japanese government. As with many of these standards the first solutions may not be the most asthetic ( remember when the govt. mandated bumper laws ? ) but as the design community becomes more familiar with the details of the regulations, the solutions will become better looking. There are passive as well as active systems to meet these regulations. Each mfg. will choose the solution that best meets their respective cost , mass, aero, aesthetic requirements. Stay tuned , these products are going to be here before you know it !
