Does anybody know the actual law on frontal license plates? Can it be displayed in the windshield? Thanks in advance.

I moved from Miami a couple of years ago to DFW, we didn't have front plates in Florida. I was getting stopped all the time first couple of months in the Ferraris and NSX. I didn't want to install front plate holders on my cars since I will be returning toi Florida in a couple of years. I bought some nice license plate frames with the clear plastic covers and mounted suction cups on the front 4 corners. I just stick the plate on the front inside windshield when I drive my cars. I have been pulled over once and they siad they didnt see the front license plate until they stopped me and sent me on my way. Guess it's OK as long as it shows toward front of car. Jon
Only the rear plate has to be on the rear-most part of the vehilce. The front plate just has to be viewable. A couple of F-body owners I know had a custom sun visor made for the passenger side. Just flip it down and all the way against the windshield while driving and flip it back up when parked for a event, lets you keep the clean look.
Attached is the wording....... On the dash loose won't pass HPD..........I just tie wrapped it on the lowest grill bar, and all is well!
I have mine on the dash of my 1st gen Rx-7, and never had a prob. with PD. But, then again, my dash has an angle as such that you can see it from the front, unlike some newer car dash boards.
Tillman, thanks for the heads-up...I was under the impression that the front-plate law was changed in Sept. '05 and they were no longer required. Must be a low-priority thing for Dallas police, or have something to do with having classic plates; I've been driving my 330 around with no front plate for 3+ years and never been stopped. I carry the second plate in the trunk in case asked for it.
the plate is viewed by most cops as an add on charge....I didn't have mine on my Rx-7 for about a year without any probs, and I live in Leon Valley, lol....
Strange I passed State Inspection on both my cars with no front plates I must admit I did not even give it a thought
Me four My white BMW has euro plates & it gets overlooked. My mom's RX300 doesn't have front plates either & we've had it inspected several times.
I put antique plates on my 400i #1) No state inspection #2) No smog check #3) No front plate needed #4) Inexpensive
I wasn't aware it was only one issued on antique....good to know.. It isn't so much the shop doing safety Inspection, it's Officer Friendly wanting to know: "Where ya goin'? "What you drinkin'?" "Is that a cigar?" A missing front plate can start that whole conversation! The Safty Inspector on my car complained that tie wrapping mine on the front covered his Goodyear Wingfoot logo on the spoiler! I assured him we take it off for shows and parades..........
When I got it first inspected... the garage was too busy checking the car out. Front plate never came up. We will see on the next inspection.
I don't think the front plate is an issue during inspection....I never had mine on the 7 when I had mine done.
I've lived in Dallas for 6 years with 1-4 cars at any given time and NONE of them have had front license plates mounted or visible and I've never been pulled over for it or had it "added on" as an additional citation. I really don't think it is enforced in the DFW area...
It is enforced in certain areas. I was ticketed for no front plate off the service road at Spring Valley/75 - the process was a pain in the butt. None of our cars have a front plate...it hasn't been an issue at inspection but then again, we always go to the same inspector.
Thanks for the heads up SpeedRacerette. How much was the fine? The Texas state code which was posted in this thread says that is a misdemeanor. Were you charged/convicted of a misdemeanor? Seems ridiculous for a non-moving violation.
It was treated like a fix it ticket. Had I not gone through all the hoops of having a custom bracket made, they would have ensued with a fine and still require compliance. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=134898402&postcount=62
Got pulled in Plano recently for not having a front plate on my car. No ticket, just a little reminder that I was supposed to have one. The officer asked about the car not coming with a front bracket. I said no it didn't and you know how things go, if you don't get it from the dealer when you buy the car, it's hard to find the time to go back and have it installed later. Really suprised me that she would pull me for the plate and nothing else.
Nothing better for them to do at time, it's happened to me numerous times. In fact Id had lost count. I'd hear some lip & then head me on my way with a warning. Kinda reminds me of that movie Blade Runner. Nothing to see here, move along, move along.
