I was trying to figure out the cleanest way to attach a front plate to the gt4 I just bought. I hate the idea of being pulled over and was not sure if the ticket for no front plate would count as a moving violation. While trying to figure out what potential ticket I was in for I surfed the MA RMV website and found that I can order a replacement front plate for $10. The RMV issues you a piece of paper which is ok for inspections and in the case you get pulled over for no front plate. This paper is issued in 4-5 days from when you place the replacement plate order. The replacement plates take 8-10 wks to get made and sent to your house. $30. a driving season to stay legal and have no worries about $$$ violations or my insurance going up is WELL WORTH it IMHO.

Dang. That seems pretty clever. Here's a question. Why don't you just scan the paper, then just reprint it in 8-10 weeks, with a new date? :)

(Just kidding of course. That would be wrong. So wrong.)

(and you absolutely should not post a scan of it, or a copy of it if they email it to you.)

    (nope, shouldn't do that.)

    vty,

That's a cool idea, I wonder if NH has a similar loophole?

I was just pulled over for "loud exhaust" last week and the cop never said anything about my plate, although I think that was the reason I was pulled over in the first place. I did some fast talking and got off but I have too many other infractions on my car so I just sucked it up and put my front plate back on.

Could you explain "advasive" maneuvering? I'd like to learn that technique.

Im not sure they will send plates to your house. I ordered vanity plates and got a notice about 3 weeks after ordered that they were avaialble for pickup at the Milford registry (when you fill out the vanity order form, you specify where you want to go to get them). On the replacement form - is there a registry location you specify? That might even buy you more time since you can carry the letter indicating the plate is ready for pickup, but just have not had time to go get it.

This is a order for a replacement plate and they did specify the single plate would be sent to my house. I got the registration card 4 days after I placed the replacement order online.

The bonus is my vanity plate is my last name, being from a big Italian family I will have a good supply of birthday/christmas gifts.

Very interesting about front plates. Wish we had something like that. We are stuck with a 'front plate' for Ontario registered vehicles.

What's the difference? Forging a document vs filing a false statement with a non-forged document, which is what it sounds like the original poster was proposing. Either could end you up in deep water.

Your replacement plate request might be in the computer system that a cop would check while pulling you over. If you showed him an "official" document that didn't jive with his computer system, you might find yourself wearing a set of stainless bracelets.

How can I get a new plate to replace one that I've lost?

Replacement plates may be ordered from an RMV branch or over the phone (617-351-4500 or 800-858-3926). The fee is $10 per plate. You will be issued a temporary plate permit to keep in the vehicle until the plate arrives. You may obtain an inspection with this permit, if needed. If both of your plates were lost or stolen, you must obtain a new set of plates (new plate/registration number) from an RMV branch.

No front plate is a fix it ticket, not a moving violation. No effect on insurance.

Hey Jerry...keep your nose in the Cali forums and stop giving out bogus info from 3k miles away :)

It sure does effect ins here in Ma. It's a moving vehicle violation and be prepared to pay more for insurance for the next 6 years.

Are you sure? I was also under the impression it does not affect your insurance premium... I personally have not had an issue with front plates...

Call your ins broker see what they say. Never mind, I'll save ya the hassle. They'll tell you that it is indeed a moving violation that will increase your premium.

I've not had a real problem either as I don't run a front plate on either my Tr or daily driver but I have had to talk my way out of not having the plate mounted to avoid a citation.

This very subject today came up at the FFIC meeting and we had a guy here who has a friend who is a MA state trooper. He called him and asked. Yes, it IS a moving violation in MA and yes, your insurance will go up.

Put the Front Plate in Your Trunk!

In CT (and I suspect elsewhere), you may get more than a ticket. You may get your car impounded, which is what almost happened to me with my "regular" car at one of those "routine" safety check roadblocks. The officer explained that 2 plates is a now an identification requirement that started with all of the new homeland security laws. I was given a warning since I was on my way to church (really), but he said he could have towed my car away on the spot.

I now keep the "extra" plate in the trunk of all of my cars, so that if I'm stopped, I can say that "its the way the dealer gave it to me" (which is true)...and that "it must be in my trunk" (which is also true).

Some cops can be such tools. That guy was full of it. It's a state law, having nothing to do with federal Homeland Security laws. Here's the current CT state law, with a history section showing that the two plate requirement started July 1, 1993 (8 years before the Patriot Act & Dept. of Homeland Security existed):

    http://search.cga.state.ct.us/surs/chap246.htm#Sec14-18.htm

Notice also, section (g) defines failure to display your plates as an "infraction". See http://www.cga.ct.gov/2007/pub/Chap881b.htm for the definition of an infraction. Basically, you'll be fined for sure, but there's nothing in there about impounding the car.
