I'm currently working on my son's 1982 Mondial 8 coupe. We are dealing with a bunch of electrical problems (big surprise there, right??!), but were also considering some possible fuel issues. The injectors appear to be original, don't look like they were ever replaced. It appears that the injectors actually sit down into a collar so that the hex on the throat of the injector is about half into a hex recess in the collar. I pulled up one of the injectors part way and indeed, the hex is half down in that collar.

So the question is -- Is what appears to be a collar around the injector threaded and can it be unscrewed? The gasket/o-ring sits below that collar. If the collar unscrews, it would make changing the injectors easy, just unscrew the collar, lift out the assembly with the collar, injector and o-ring, change the injector and o-ring, and screw it back into the manifold. Could it actually be that easy??? Otherwise, it's pull the injector, somehow get the o-ring out, somehow put in a new o-ring, and then drive the new injector through the o-ring and down into that collar. Am I missing something?? Any help would be appreciated.

p.s. My grandson and I went to a local hardware store, picked up a long bolt and some other pieces for around $6 bucks, and made a puller-tool. Easy. That's how we pulled the one injector part way up to figure out what we were dealing with. Thanks!!

Dave, it looks like I was right. That big fat collar is threaded and does unscrew from the manifold. How did you get that to unscrew? Wrench on the injector? Pull the injector and us an Allen wrench? Any hints on making it easier to unscrew the collar would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Unscrew with the injector. It is not intended to remove injector until collar is removed.

Yes, exactly as Brian has noted. But do be aware that you are dealing with soft metals - brass and aluminum - so go gently and don't horse it.

Which is a lesson I learned the hard way after I rounded off the aluminum collar's hex on one injector by forcing it.

Self-explanatory sequence of pictures showing how I eventually removed this troublesome tight collar back then after I'd ruined it:

And don't forget a dab of anti-seize compound upon reassembly to save the next guy from having to do something like this.
