Sensor works normal from full to half tank than goes erratic bouncing from empty to half full. Can sensor be rebuilt? Thought I saw somewhere that early Fiat has same sending unit as Ferrari, can anyone send info and part numbers?

    They all do that sir

Seriously - the light begins to come on (first flicker) with about 100 miles left and then thinks about going solid with about 50 left - if that's what you see then that is so normal that you'll need to find a better excuse to tear down the car !

Were you looking for a cheap solution, or just a solution?

If the latter, why not have a custom sender made up which dampens the indication (i.e. not electronically, but physically). Isspro from Portland, Oregon made up a sender for my Lotus Esprit. I had to find all the specs, though, such as bolt pattern, height of tank, approximate length of sender, resistance at full and empty, etc. The custom sender has a float inside a cylindrical chamber with a bleed port. Fuel flows into the chamber relatively slowly, so there are no rapid movements of levels due to fuel sloshing about in the tank. I'm assuming this is the cause of the 308's indication fluctuations?

You can buy electronic damping solutions for some cars, but I haven't heard so many good reports about them and you may have rewire the car... not good if you want to return the car to original.

Pulled out the fuel sending unit on my 78 308.The coiled wire resistor had broken wires in the middle of the curved resistor. Bought a fiat sending unit 124 FI part number 4432195 from Allisons automotive a so. Cal. fiat parts dealer ($70.00) and swapped out the complete resistor housing with the broken Ferrari housing. Identical match and resodered everything.

Having the sending unit diagnosed is your first step. Modifications can be taken a few different directions for either a slower moving gauge or a more accurate one
