engine has 60k miles this year and fuel pumps are working fine - age unknown. if it were your 81 gtsi would you replace the pumps for age just to avoid the dreaded flatbed ride or just not worry and drive? as always, thanks for your ideas. cheers, jon s

    Jon,
if the pumps dont make any noises I would do nothing. They are reliable pumps. And the fact, that spare parts quality is more and more decreasing due to cutting costs, is one more reason to only replace, what's really necessary. But for peace of mind you could carry a new pump in your boot.
But beware. It's always the things, what fail, which you never thought about :)

    Best Regards from Germany
    Martin

The pump on my GT4 failed a few weeks ago, two days (the Friday) before I wanted to take the car to our UK FOC national meet, which I couldn't get to (in the Ferrari) as unable to get it replaced till the Monday. That was a pain.

Before it failed I didn't perceive any problem, and even when it did, it still gave a whirring noise, but no fuel into the carbs. But now I have a new one I realise the difference as the engine fires up first time every time, which it never did before.

If your car fires up easily, probably no problem, if not, maybe learn from my experience.

BTW - certainly on a GT4 it is not a 5 minute job replacing it. Wheel off, and wheel arch liner off just to get to it.
