My fuel pump comes on when the ignition is Position 2. The connector for the safety on the fuel distributor is in place. I want that safety to function properly. What are the most common places to look for the problem? Would a bad pump relay cause it?

The start and run relays responsible for fuel pump operation are located at the bottom row of the relay panel at the right and left corners. While only one is probably bad, they are known to fail, so best to change them both and perhaps this is a good time to do them all.

For a quick (stores are closed) diagnosis of the air flow sensor turn-off switch, you can swap them with another same type relay. The lower right 'start' relay can be replaced with the relay above it (headlight) for you to check the air flow safety switch.

And the lower left fuel pump relay can replaced with the upper right (opposite corner) relay which is for brake light test. Mark the original relays before you start. Engine won't be affected by leaving those relays out.

Relay numbers are printed on them and (if original) will end in 101 and 113. Quality relays are available for about $4 if you are willing to purchase on the internet. You may wish to replace them all at this point. You will be looking for 5 pin SPST and SPDT automotive cube relays...but first make certain this will cure your problem.

A relay location drawing is in the Owner's Manual if you get befuddled.
The diagram below describes the circuit.

Thanks Paul...very clear. I disconnected my return line to check for obstructions when I did a fuel pressure test. Having seen the volume of fuel that's circulated I want to be very certain the pump stops when the engine does.
