So I went to the gas station this morning to fill up my car. I pull in and there is line for the pumps. So I turn off my car waiting for the person ahead of to finish filling her SUV. As sat waiting I started thinking about how long it takes to fill up a car. With all the technology in racing, which some of it eventually making it into production cars. How come the fuel pump system they use for F1 and other racing series are not used at normal gas stations? I had to sit there for almost 10 minutes for this truck to fill up gas.

In F1 the rigs push out 12 liters per second or something extraordinarily fast. If you were to do that with our pumps fuel would be splashed everywhere, nozzles would fly out of the cars etc. There's a lot of pressure in hoses that carry large amounts of fluid. Look at fire hoses for example, could you imagine watering your lawn with one?

Also the F1 rigs have a couple of different "seals" to attach to the car for safety. You would have to outfit your car with a similar setup. All in all the risks will far out weigh the benefits.

P.S. Have you ever seen a mishap in a F1 pit box with the fuel hose? It isn't pretty.

    1. Cost (billions to retrofit millions of pumps)
    2. Wouldn't fit so cars may have to be modified- more cost
    3. Too complex for the average person to use
    4. Too heavy (when we went from leaded to unleaded gas the handles were made smaller and lighter so women could use them)
    5. Many people would see it as a way for oil companies to raise prices and would be bad PR for them. Not what they are looking for.

BTW Pay at the Pump is a huge time saver for the consumer.

I don't think it would be too difficult to come up with a gas pump nozzle that twists and locks onto the car. I'm sure a tank could be filled in much less than half the time it takes now.
Yes, retrofitting would be expensive. But we can't forever keep the ancient systems that are currently in use.

Just a reminder, I don't have to pump my own gas, the only good thing Jersey has going for it.

I don't mind pumping my own gas. Can't imagine letting someone getting close to the Fcar with a loose gas nozzle.

If this is the only thing good about living in Jersey I would suggest moving ASAP. What do you have to live for?

I also note that you are not a New Jersey (football) Giants fan either. You can move to Dallas but you'll have to look for a Full Service gas station. ;)

How about the cars when they start to age? One little crack in the tank neck and you'll be shooting gas all over yourself.

Jersey is ok, but a move to Dallas or Maranello would certainly be an upgrade.

As soon as we start getting alternative fuels like LNG or hydrogen we will get the fuel nozzels that lock onto the car. Every one will be different so you can't put the wrong fuel in the car, but someone will manage to do so.

I remember hearing one of the commentators on Speed this season (can't recall which one, maybe Machett) say that the refueling rigs and such for Formula 1 were adapted/taken from helicopters... anyone else catch that? I'd never heard it before, or since...

Yeah, were lucky right now we only have diesel and regular. I've still seen people screw up and put diesel in a car, oh boy, I wonder how that works out.

You need to relearn to use these forced breaks in time for relaxation ... just tune out and give yourself a break.

We have all forgotten how to relax because of this stupid modern world WE have created for ourselves.

Diesel should run in a regular car. It will smoke a lot though.

And yes I remember Matchett saying that about helicopters. He said it was designed for refueling helicopters while they are still running for quick splash and go's.
