Ive taken out my sender unit as the fuel guage was not working,I adjusted the copper strips and re-installed, gauge is now working 1/4 tank of gas the red light was on,pulled it out again and adjusted with a meter,re installed no red light as fuel level was higher than the float would register. My question is does the red light come on when the ignition is first turned on Im thinking not as the float is still in same postion not like oil pressure gauge.

No it doesn't, only if your fuel level is low enough for it to stay on all the time.

Thanks Tony,Ill try and take some pics of the inside of the sender unit and share it with the rest of the weekend mechanics, I had no idea how it works until I took it out amazing and simple really.

With the caveat that when you have about a 1/3 of a tank of fuel, taking gradual turns will also cause the low fuel light to come on until you're on the straight. On my Dino at least, this occurs way more often than in modern day cars.

Take care upon reinstalling to replace it in the exact position it was originally. Should you rotate it then the float may hit a tank wall and inhibit correct readings. It happened to my Euro car as when I first bought it the fuel gauge would never drop below a third of a tank. Removing, rotating one mount space and replacing cured that.

Note: Not all Dinos had the sender installed on the same side tank; some were in the fuel tank on the Driver's side, others installed in the fuel tank on the passenger's side. It kinda seems that USA cars had senders on the Driver's side tank while Euro cars had it on the passenger's side fuel tank

I'm starting to think that if the Compendium covered every variation and nuances of what shipped from the factory, it would be twice the size that is now...yikes!
