Hey guys, everytime i fill up the tank in my 328, i get a strong fuel smell inside the car. It eventually goes away as the tank gets between 3/4 and full. I tried to tighten my gas cap as best i could and still get the smell of fuel inside the cabin. Visually the hoses seem to be OK, Any sugestions out there?

I had the same exact thing with my Mondial. I found the vent hose that goes to the charcoal canister missing. This is very dangerous as it may result in the occasional going up in flames. On the Mondial the only way to see the vent hose is to take out the inner rear fender.

I agree with Tillman. Don't drive it until it’s fixed.

While we're on the subject of fuel lines, the boating community has come to the conclusion that some of the fires on older boats are due to the ethanol in newer fuels deteriorating the fuel lines. Apparently the rubber compounds in boats (and cars) built before ethanol was added to fuel were not formulated with ethanol in mind. They also believe ethanol is corrosive to older fuel tanks.

Their conclusion is to replace all fuel lines with new lines engineered to withstand ethanol. Good advice anyway!

This is true. Cars from the 70's and before had a lot of plastic fuel line which gets brittle and cracks from modern gasoline additives over time. You MUST replace all this stuff with modern fuel line. Twin gas tanked cars have a T that connects them and that T is also this kind of plastic. Any auto supply store will sell a brass one. You must replace this or eventually it will leak. I don't know about Ferraris but you may find these T's other places as well in the fuel line.

The gas smell is likely from the emissions system. Either a bad vent line, charcoal canister filled with raw fuel, etc. Find out and fix it before you drive any more! Remember, liquid gas is safe; it's the fumes that go KABOOM.

Maybe the big filler neck coupler, it's rubber......

That's the accumulator can, not the charcoal filled one.....

    Anyway good advice..

It was Mercury Outboard that recalled all the v6s years ago to replace all fuel lines, they have a 3 2bbl setup, or did back in the day.........

I had the same problem on my Gt4.
There are a lot of vent hoses on top of the tank and going from the carbs to the fuel vapor canister. Also the fill and tank cross over hoses are there and involved.
You need to inspect all of the hoses and then carefully and methodicaly tighten all of the hose clamps.

Check the rubber gasket for the fuel level sender also.

My problem was the 1-way valve attached to the filler neck. Can be seen when u remove the driverside wheel well.

a commen problem, my mondi had and still does have this same problem. i have replaced every single hose on the tanks and vents. even the bridge hose between tanks a real PITA!. so after replacing every single fule related hose i was suprised to still find the fuel smell after fillup, upon rechecking the lines i noticed the problem. my mondi is a euro version and this may or may not be the reason but anyway. there is a 12mm vent line from both tanks that runs up to the filler neck, however instead of tying back in before the cap it vents below the cap. so when filling the air vents outunder the filler neck, and if you spill fuel out side of the neck it'll collect and drain back into the tank via that hose.

so when i'm full up the vent line vents vapor, a bad thing into the atmosphere but at least it's outside the engine bay!

just check'd the US parts book, the US version has the vent returning before the filler neck.

That sounds patently illegal in all 50 states. If you sell your car you might want to check into that.
