Just had my car up on the lift and rebuilt/replaced the a/c compressor (following a great write up on this forum, actually). Took it down off the lift after about a month, and on the way out of my community it started throwing flashing, check engine lights which I’ve read is indicative of misfires. I felt a slight miss at low RPMs, when coming on and off the throttle, but at higher power inputs, everything seemed completely fine. I figured the plugs might’ve been fouled from sitting too long, so I gave it some good hard romps and everything seemed to smooth out for the rest of the 40 minute drive. Laster in the afternoon I took it out again - still getting a CEL and the intermittent miss at low RPM. Drive it about 20 minutes and parked at my destination for about an hour and on my way out the car had almost no power - and intermittent surging. Flashing CELs. I gingerly limped the car home. From my experience, it felt like fuel starvation. Tank was full. I checked pressure at the rails and am getting 45psi on both sides, dropping to 40psi under throttle. From what I've seen, pressure should be 55psi. I'm thinking fuel pumps at this point given that both rails are putting out similar pressure. Both rails hold pressure equally well on shutdown. Could I request the help of any of the gurus on here provide some guidance?
Check/replace your fuel filters if you're unaware if/when it's been done. I would also cut one or both open to see if you have any rubber trash in them from the fuel pump anti-vibration pads & the rubber collars that hold the fuel pumps. If you find trash in the filters, have the tank emptied and flushed out & do the same for the entire fuel system. Check the pump screens too....
Hey Kai.... I did the fuel pump overhauls. Use the Fiammenghi fuel pump supports. There is also an improved viton antivibration pad. https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/posts/148424960/ Can provide all other part numbers and lots of pictures. Its straightforward, but like anything else takes time to get it all done. Since you were working on the AC, are you sure your Accessory belt was properly tensioned and your alternator is charging the battery? Fuel pressure should definately be higher
I was going to ask if the pads were in the tank, but Nick’s response below answered that. Thanks! Thanks, Nick! Great write up and exactly what I needed. How long did that job take you? Looks like most of two days. Glad you figured out your power issue. Mine is 9/10 one of fuel starvation based on my experience so I’m going to bet my whole pump and associated rubber assemblies are kaputski. I’m getting ready to sell this car, and I think it knows it, because it’s being a pain in my ass. New owner is going to get rebuilt injectors, audio system, alternator, a/c compressor, and now, it seems, fuel system. Lucky them lol
If it was a fuel flow limiting issue, say, due to blockages, why would the problem go away at higher rpms?
Initially it presented itself as just a very slight stumble at low RPMs. When it finally gave out, all my power loss is at the high end and during almost any type of acceleration. Slow speeds, and cruise were the only operable conditions. Acceleration was extremely non-linear and the car would almost die at times.
More comfortably it’s a multi day day job.. Strip the trunk and expose fuel tank panels. Drain the tank via the shaeder valves. I found putting a jumper wire on one of the fuel pump relay sockets on the fuseboard and then using the battery cutoff switch was a safe way to control gas flow at the engine bay. But I was using a 5 gallon gas can to drain into at the time. Once drained, open the fuel pump covers. I made my own tool. For me, the carnage of deteriorated rubber was easy to see…. See my thread for pictures. The covers and hose assembly were in good condition that I elected not to change them. I did replace the cover gasket on each. My anti vibration pad was completely disintegrated. I used this, as recommended by another member here for an alternative…. https://www.amazon.com/hz/mobile/mission?p=EHs3Zdy0u4WeimVY8cOFHonG4eT4OrbhaTGOQE9HV1pI7TdYm3lq0ND8oV4xHQ9OBqWVUDko%2B0bFmHYHhJ0LCNB43KbTcd%2FA%2Be4XW%2BQVfa2voxPs7F09%2Fp3P53LY2fy4Jv%2B1CjXWU%2F%2BWX36CFTR7c3j68uGJa58We8ceSDyuZJa98t9KVjGHvP5xAEBvd9f8xqHdC%2BwxXZqaNvOAuweVkDt8xEVh0h5fKGOoodk8asxkCGuyoEtf0xCs0S7cz%2BUEN7mC987wCgWWyOqYH8X8oVt6%2ByCIT%2FJjiaUoxtOPMZrVpESuovR0gBH1lgTu5FFt35E3aI8xwS0dn8cjIgZp%2FxwF5U%2B1k5JoTVZsUDabOjkG92wvu2yWv0wXdxlLpQzAuIFA2i9Odzc%3D&ref_=ci_mcx_mi&pf_rd_r=13A2EECQQ3E2245ZYSTM&pf_rd_p=1167637a-376e-4d30-92da-a7977b0ccfaa&pd_rd_r=f7da3068-267d-4f53-a3f6-b4f09ee9fcec&pd_rd_w=AYsoX&pd_rd_wg=i8moa the pump buckets and Fabio support were intuitive to rebuild and didn’t take long. reassembly was also straightforward, with the only thing I remember was the covers wanted to twist as you got to tightening down the ring. There are metal piece available here, which is likely a good upgrade or if you find cracks in yours. I rolled the dice and reused mine, so far so good…. https://gtcp.com/product/upgraded-aluminum-fuel-pump-mounting-plate-for-ferrari/ Fuel filters on a lift weren’t difficult, but it’s still a tight space. For me, as bad as my mounts were and as much rubber was in the tank, I actually found no debris in the fuel filter. YMMV, but it is a pretty fine mesh that protects the fuel pump in the tank. I filled back up with about 10 gallons to check for leaks and ran it for 2 weeks before I actually put my trunk back together. For part shopping you will need Fuel pump support x2. I used Fabio Fiammenghini part Fuel pump cover gasket x2. Ferrari 126835 or 897696 Anti vibration pad x2. See above link Fuel filter kit x2 (mine came with copper washers) 152212 Ring nut tool. Generic Other/optional parts Pump covers In tank hose from cover to pump and clamps
Nick, that amazon link to the alternate anti vibration pad doesn't seem to be working for me.. > YMMV, but it is a pretty fine mesh that protects the fuel pump in the tank I guess that's a metal screen that you cleaned and reused during this process which caught most of the garbage?
Try this link... thanks Nick, I had saved that link from Omar now that I look more carefully... nice summary of the fuel pump work, thank you!
