Just wanted to share some info on my recent 30,000 major at Vancouver Ferrari/Maserati. Work completed: 1. Engine out service that included removing the heads and having them rebuilt. 2. Fabspeed headers, secondary cat delete pipe, cat deletes, O2 extenders and exhaust. 3. Various things repaired that pissed me off and new Michelins installed. Ok...this has all been talked to death so here's some insight from my experience. This thing rips!! I was laughing out loud at the farts/pops/flames shooting out! It was a little nerve wracking purchasing a exhaust system that has not a lot of history online from people that have purchased it. I didn't want a super loud Capristo or Tubi as I live downtown but this exhaust is perfect...tame at low rpm and raucous when you floor it...no fitment issues/drone and super quality. TEM performances in NAPA Ca did the heads...great work Rich! Daniel at Ricambi...what more can I say...always great. Justin and Ash at FMOVC...superb, professional and great sense of humour...more than reasonable pricing also. We have great independents here but Im within walking distance of the business and they are serious about building business. Im glad I picked up the phone and talked to Yellow Compass...if your "on the fence" just do it....pricing was spectacular and even if you don't purchase anything, you will still be laughing after getting of the phone with that character! Now, I have to get back into the car in the pouring rain to buy some lottery tickets....
Awesome! I'm glad you like the results. I'm getting ready to weld up a catless y-pipe and test pipes for my '97 soon. I built the fixture when I did a set of Hugh-flow cats for a friend, just need to go out to the garage and start cutting/welding.
That's not a bad idea....I didn't have the time or technology. I have some of those mini cat/O2 extenders on the way right now...will let you guys know if they work.
that seems like a great setup.. im sure the car runs fantastic..! but what year/version car do you have..? at 2.7 ( 1995) or 5.2 (1996+)..? if you purchased/waiting for 02 spacers, then likely you have a 5.2 car..are you currently getting any CEL with the catless setup... ? as it sounds you don't have the spacers on yet.. any pics or sounds clips would be nice..
Spacers are in...it's a bit of a crap shoot if you get a cel or not first time you fire it up. I called Mike at Yellow Compass and he dealt with it immediately....I have never met any of these vendors btw and don't want to come across as a sales agent for them...just great people to deal with that have the same passion for these cars. Vehicle is a 5.2 355 Spider manual shift. I will attempt to get some sound bites(?) from it today. Am going for a 300 mile drive today....it's either going to be amazing or a flat deck ride home Oh, the dealership says they usually get the system re-flashed by Fabspeed. I will comment more on Fabspeeds system after I put this trip on it. The guys at the factory were also great to deal with, fit and finish is what you would expect....amazing. Another reason I chose the complete system was to avoid any fitment issues.....and it went together perfectly. The Fabspeed sound video of the exhaust system doesn't do it justice....it's a little more "raw" when you get on it. The tech that worked on my car was laughing his ass off telling me in a thick Irish accent the it was "shooting flames out the back"!
ok. but doesn't seem you answered the question? are you currently getting any CEL, with the setup? were you running with no spacers initially and got CEL, and now put the spacers in and no more CEL?
I am running the spacers and O2 extenders. It is Fabspeed from the headers to the exhaust muffler. All cats are deleted. I did get a cel but no slow down light so it still runs great. Yellow Compass is sending me the mini cat/O2 extenders and they should be installed by the end of next week then I will report if that fixed the cel. If this doesn't work, it will have to be a re-flash....I'm hoping not though, I've spent an enormous amount of money on this car. Im not sure if you are aware of the mini-cat system....I just discovered it two weeks ago...hope it works!
ok it's clear now. you're currenlyy running regular spacers and still got CEL. to my understanding you have to put steel wool in the spacer to work. yes I'm aware of the fabspeed mini-cat spacers. they look very good. buy not much reports on them if they work? indeed report back when you get the mini cat spacers in. regarding the fabspeed ecu tune, I checked the website, doesn't look they are offering anymore? also their ecu tune, was more for power gains by adjusting A/F trims etc. I don't think they were able to permanently delete codes
FMOV said they were sending customer ecu's to Fabspeed and it cured the cel, that service was offered to me at a much more reasonable rate than what I remember was advertised when I saw the service last year on the Fabspeed website. I drove the car about 150 miles yesterday and am currently writing this from a hotel/casino. I will do another 100 miles today. So far, no issues and my ears aren't ringing. GF insisted we stop after about an hour to get her some earplugs The headers weren't coated, just heat deflectors that came with them were installed and it all seems to work....idled for 20 minutes at the border and everything ran cool/normal. I'm lovin this system so far!
Glad you love the exhaust. I recently did the same thing. What code are you getting ? I'm still playing around with P1448 for the bypass valve. Are you getting that one too ? Your data point would be helpful. Thanks, Skipp
Rob, I am glad to hear you're enjoying your new set up. Shoot me over a video clip if you get a chance - we would love to hear the new sound!
Just got back to Vancouver...had the gf record the car in the Massey Tunnel....good god!!!....I mean.....I just don't have words.....my ears.....my shoulder from gf punching.....the poor souls that were also in the tunnel.....I'm taking tomorrow off to do some proper video/recording....even the Canadian Customs dude was gushing about the sound to me as traffic piled up behind the car I'm in loooove...... Will do my best to post everything tomorrow evening.....if your considering an exhaust system....ah....eff it.....the videos will explain all. Also, no problems with the engine, no leaks...it scares me when everything works. As for a code, I don't have my reader here Skip but will ask FMOV tomorrow. One more thing, Michelin Super Sports stick like glue even in the rain!! I had Potenzas on before....I don't race the car but seat of the pants tell me the Michelins are in a different league. Speaking of seat of the pants, the car is definetly quicker, has waaay better throttle response and not a hint of drone....I'm wearing earplugs in the tunnels tomorrow and I'm leaving Fifi at home
Will do Skipp....just looked at the video the gf did....phone was between her thighs (yeah...haha)....so sound was muffled...at least you can't hear the swearing and violence. Will check in tomorrow BTW, she's not a big girl...but definetly scared and angry.....
I was going to do the sound/video today....yeah...WAS. Its one of the last nice days here in Vancouver, dropped the GF off at work, got a red bull, sat back in the car, hit the convertible roof retract switch and nothing.... Went to the dealership, they got the car in immmediatly and diagnosed a bad passenger seat potentiometer. Its interesting that's the dealership still has to utilize SD1 to deal with the seats/top. I also asked them to pull codes as I have the CEL and the SD1 doesn't display numbers...it actually prints out the issues. In my case and as is usual, its the bypass and "aged" exhaust sensors. The service guy says he has sent out 10 different 355 customers ecu's for a reflash at Fabspeed and that's the cure. I will do the sound/video tomorrow as its supposed to be our last sunny day. Am curious...have gone through almost three tanks of fuel and have burned a half liter of oil...I can actually see smoke when I really redline it through the gears...rebuilt heads and the cylinder liners were all immaculate...is that normal? I know these cars burn oil and mine has no more cats to hide the smoke...yeah..im curious. Before the repairs, I would burn a liter per tank!
I think your measure for oil burn should be by miles. not tanks of fuel. nonetheless 1liter oil burn per tank was crazy high. but even 1/2 liter for 3 tanks of fuel seems high, especially after a rebuild? my car burnt less then 2 liters over the 5,400kms I've driven this season. owners manual says 1-2L burn per 1000kms. weird the code is only for the bypass? you should be getting post O2 sensor " cat efficiency" codes the exhaust probe at the bypass doesn't sniff anything. it's solely to read exhaust temp. so there must be something else going on.
Hey Tony....cat efficiency did show up...the old master tech that did the work said that as long as there is no "slow down" it will run great. I literally put a piece of electrical tape over the cel and got on with my day. Perhaps the new o2 extenders will work...will keep all posted. Oil consumption is worrying though...can definetly see it with redlining the engine. I know that my original cats did a great job of hiding it. Like a said earlier, the cylinder bores looked great, we turned the engine over to look at them and there were no grooves or any evidence of wear...nothing. Out of round? I have never overheated the car....aargh. My friends that own these cars say "they all burn oil...enjoy it".
well it depends how many miles you are getting out of your 3 tanks of fuel..? if youre getting maybe ~250miles per tank.. that's about 750miles or ~1200kms in total. so half a liter oil burn.. could be somewhat reasonable.. the owner manual saying 1-2L per 1000kms.. seems very high though.. and yes for sure.. harder more aggressive driving will burn more.. the oil volume in the 355.. offers more then enough safety margin.. even if youre at or below the min line on the stick.. between the min-max line on the stick.. the manual says represents 2L. I generally try to keep my oil anywhere between the min line and mid point of stick.. I will only add oil ..if after multiple dip stick tests.. its at or just below the min line.. I probably test it 10 times per occasion while idling.. since the oil level rises and falls during heat cycle as fans kick on and off..
Thanks for doing the math Tony! I understand that the original cats captured the bulk of it when I was really going through oil before the head rebuilds. It's always entertaining for me to see list prices for 355 parts....craziest asking price I have ever seen was for used primary cats....$6000 I had Fabspeed primary cats on the car and they actually still look clean inside. Am going to go make some noise today Cheers.
Thanks for confirming the codes. Same issues here. Car runs great but can't pass inspection with CEL. FYI, my O2 spacers with cat material built into them are working. It's only the BPass temp probe complaining. Praying Goth's new Bypass TCU is going to work....
still confused here why you guys are getting bypass exhaust probe codes? all 3 exhaust probes are to read a high temp scenario to trigger a flashing SDL or solid SDL to put car in limp mode. having test pipes on has nothing to do with the exhaust probes? especially at the bypass. where often the bypass is closed, in which the bypass probe doesn't get any exhaust flow. where something else must be happening in both your cases, perhaps damage to the probe during removal/install. to my understanding the probes are an independent system related to the SDL and not CEL codes the only time I see the bypass probe to trigger a cel code is if the car is run for extended time with either the bypass failed closed or wired open, then I would expect the bypass probe to trigger a CEL because its seeing too much flow (open all the time) or no flow at all ( failed closed).
Your right Tony, SD2 quoted "aged sensors" along with bypass valve. I'm a simple human...could be wrong...exhaust is flying through at unprecedented levels and the 5.2 prehistoric brain is confused....the mission...if we take it...is to fool this abomination...how...I'm not sure...(hah...from the movie Idiocracy...am kind of hammered right now)...anyways, the cure that I have found is approximately 2inch of black electrical tape, cut perfectly and placed over the cel light. Having said all this, I enjoyed my day tremendously...driving all over the Vancouver mainland and giggling like a school girl every time I redlined!! Car ran like....well...like a weapon?...It sounded Effin great and I really laughed out loud all day....burnt a tank of Chevron 94 and really enjoyed myself...oh...and I didn't see the light Anyways, when the supposed "cure" arrives and is installed, I will report. I did get sounds recorded today but the quality was not great...will try again tomorrow
