Anyone know any long and fun roads to drive on? I cant seem to find too many around my house so I thought I would ask here. I would like to really enjoy driving my car. Also when do most of you guys get together for your weekend runs? I dont have an F car but I was hoping to ride along and chat with you guys.

25A from about Glen Cove (it is known as Northern Blvd in Western Nassau County) to Huntington is a beautiful road. Of course, you always have to worry about cops and snail cars, but every once in a while you can open up a bit.

That's not as much fun as a nice curving road where you can go fast also. All you can do is go fast on a straight road. Driving is more about curves and turns and speed all at the same time. That's why 25A is so nice in some parts as stated. It's a winding road where you can indeed open up in some areas.

Wantaugh and Meadowbrook are PACKED if you go on weekends, people still hit the beach every weekend. Gotta go on weekday evenings.

The wantagh or meadowbrook are good for heading down on weeknights to catch the sunset. I've caught a few sunsets this summer driving west on Ocean parkway. 'til recently rush hour was mostly over so the roads were clear.

25A is a great ride for much of Nassau county and out to Northport in Suffolk. Some other fun roads are north of 25a in oyster bay cove, locust valley, upper brookville, etc.

    Saw Mill River Parkway.

Lot's of curves, hills, and bends. Take it south from the beginning (from 684???) as there is no place on the south side for the cops to hide (it's only two lanes, on the left of the left lane is the guard rail, on the right of the right lane is mostly rocks and cliffs). Cops are only on the North side. After 15 miles or so it starts to become a more local route with traffic lights, but prior to that it is great.

Depending on what type of trip you are looking for head up to Lake Placid. I went to school not too far from there and at this time of year the colors are just starting to change. Driving through the area in the fall is like driving through a picture...:)

Thats interesting you mention cops...I split my time between Long Island and South Florida, and let me tell you when I get back to Long Island the first thing I do is go for a ride on 25A (areas you mentioned)...being in S. Florida too much can make you go through TRW (Twisty Road Withdrawl) but the other day I was remarking to myself there really dont seem to ever be cops checking speed on 25A atleast between Glen Cove and Northport? Where have you seen them?

Many great roads north of the city- the saw mill is nice, but often crowded with Suburbanites driving Suburbans through the suburbs. Head out on the Pallisades toward Bear Mountain, but take the Central Valley exit, 6 W. Proceed for several miles- then follow a ramp to the right with a sign for West Point. This is 293N. It eventually becomes 218N. Stay with it if you like curves. You'll see what i mean. Not far from there, in the other direction, is 7 Lakes, lots of twisty roads, but the surfaces leave much to be desired. This is a haven for motorcyclists, since it is largely park roads, the speed limits are somewhat low, but you've got a beautiful combination of lakes and curvy roads, shrouded in forests.
Also, if you like a mix of hi-way and backroads, get on 17, head out toward the Catskills. At some point, head north toward Syracuse, but get off in the Finger Lakes. Brilliant roads, bordering on lakes in between vineyards. While i wouldn't necessarily recommend the wine, you are in NY State's vineyard area, and all the comes with it- small inns, some charming towns and alot of people that are closely related to one another. Skaneateles is the nicest town up there- a good hotel, decent food choices, and great roads in the off-season.
Another highly recommended route is up thru the Aidirondacks, then go into Vermont along Lake Champlain. I have some routes marked from a rally we did a few years ago- some brilliant backroads. Pretty soon, it will be fall and foilage season- with that comes hordes of slow pokes in tourist mode. This is probably not a bad time of year to go- kiddies are back in school, vacation is over, and the fall hordes have not yet invaded.

I had the greatest drive today, nice twisty winding road thru beautiful country side. Take 684 N, get off at exit 7 and take rt 116 east until you hit ridgefield. Right on the way is Vox, a pretty good restuarant.
