While driving our 348 I am hearing a sound from the engine bay that oddly sounds like a turkey. :) I know, I know, interesting way to describe a sound, but that is what it sounds like.

While cruising at just about any speed it is faint, but noticeable. It is not constant, and comes and goes randomly. If I put the car in neutral and coast the noise goes away. While still in neutral if I rev the motor the sound is not present (should eliminate tensioner bearings, water pump, A/C, alt). Only after putting the car back into gear does the noise come back.

I do not hear the noise while sitting still, only when moving.

    Any ideas?

Have you checked to be sure there is NOT a turkey in the engine bay? I always look for the simple fixes first.

Seriously, do bumps in the road have any effect? Does your deck lid close tight? is the airbox etc tight. is it with or without the A/C on?

Check the basics. What's the level for your tranny fluid?

LOL..... Yeah, no turkey in there. Tranny fluid level is fine. Just put Mobil 1 in there a month or so ago. Bumps do not seem to affect it at all. The only time I hear it is when we are driving. If I take it out of gear and coast the noise will go away until I put it back in gear. So it doesn't appear to be something loose rattling around back there. A/C has been off.

If I understand the workings of the tranny, everything is spinning while the car is rolling so I don't suspect a bearing going out. Or should I? I can rev the engine while in neutral and there is no noise so it doesn't appear to be engine related. I am scratching my head here.

One thing to note... I found a few drops of gear oil today when I pulled her out of the garage. So my tripple seals are going out. But this wouldn't cause the noise I am hearing, or at least I would think it would.....

Either way, I at least have a clutch job coming up.

My guess would have been the clutch and now that you have found the oil I would think you have found the problem. Good luck.

I pulled the pumpkin off today to see where our leak was coming from. The leak was from the slave cylinder/TO Bearing. I have ordered the Hill T/O bearing from Daniel along with the triple seals(not currently leaking).

After pulling the clutch apart I noticed that the bearing at the back of the flywheel sounded a little rough. It wasn't horrible, but it was not as smooth as you would expect. So I will probably replace that too while I am in there.

Had some typical hot spots on the flywheel, but I don't know if I should have it machined or just leave it alone. Thoughts?

On another note... Since I have the entire back end of the car apart I decided to go ahead with removing the mufflers and run pipe from the cats back. :) Which in hindsight is pretty stupid because the noise problem that I was having will not be heard whether I solved the problem or not.. LOL!!!

BTW... When does the clutch fluid stop dripping out??? It's like the energizer bunny.......still going!!!

    I will post photos shortly...

The funny thing I have found with manual trannys is they will typically only make bad noises under load, thusly no noise while spinning in neutral. I have misdiagnosed a few this way! Keep us posted.

After months of chasing this mysterious sound I was finally able to track it down. As it got louder and louder it was a little easier to pin point the location..

And the winner is.......... right rear wheel bearings... Since we just had our baby girl in January I have not had time to get under there and do the job myself so I took it to a shop where they verified that it was in fact the wheel bearings. Should have her back on the road next week... :)
