Is it good, I'm considering buying it? I still can't imagine averaging 90+mph across the entire country, the man has got major balls.

first half of book is about the 2003-2005 Gumball Rallys. The rest is about the 31 hour record drive. I like the topic, it reads nicely.

I heard the NPR segment and saw the CNN segment, too. I'm curious: is Mr. Roy concerned about the legal authorities coming after him? There are numerous cases of "admissions against interest" that have come back to haunt the party. Any comments, especially in the absurd context of speed limit enforcement?

on our road trip we spoke with several cops and DA's and their general impression was that since he did it without being caught and no one got hurt, they don't really care. I'm sure if there is some rogue DA out there who wanted to prosecute for several thousand moving violations they could, but no one alex nor I has spoken to seems to care that much.

    MattF,

Very interesting. Thanks for the response. I'm a little surprised by this, as I've heard of numerous instances when the 5-0 or the DA's get ahold of admissions against interest and prosecute to the full extent. And, given the average speed, any charges would likely begin with a reckless speeding, which we all know has very serious consequences for our license and insurance. So, this all just perplexes me when I get popped for 10-15 mph over the limit, and it's as if I commited a robbery! Judges have no leniency. Nor do DAs. Nor do the LEOs. At least where I live.

Anyway, more power to you and Mr. Roy.

It would be a very complex case to prosecute at this point, because exact roads, times, and exact speeds at any given point would be difficult to figure out. And since that is necessary information to prosecute a speeding or reckless driving case, I doubt the work required to get that information would be worth the reward of busting him after the fact. I'd imagine that if he were caught red handed doing some of those speeds it would be a different story, but a year later seems unlikely. If you happened to read my write up of our (non-record breaking) cross country drive, you'd see that I was actually sort of caught speeding, pulled over, and the cop was so confused he gave me a warning for equipment violation and let me go. Something about driving a marked foreign police car just throws them way out of wack.

    MattF,

I understand the comment. As I thought about it last night, it would certainly be possible to argue that one was obeying the speed limit in that specific jurisdiction, but speeding in others. Of course, it's a shell game, but I do believe one that can work.

Anyway, I'm glad you won't be having any after-the-fact troubles from this experiment.

Nothing says "come and get me you law enforcement pu55ies" by bragging about getting away with it. That said, the film would have to depict precise counties or jurisdiction for prosecution though, until subpeona?

what about when people post videos of themselves speeding and then either broadcast them online or sell them? Ever heard of anyone getting arrested after the fact for that? If alex is going to get arrested, I could think of a hundred other people who could get arrested too, but I've never heard of that.
