which seems to be by far the most popular game of poker going.

Examples would be what 2 hole cards to play and what the threshold is to throw away.

If you have a pair, even if 2's, do you play?

Will you play an off suit Q 7?

Will you play any hole cards if one is an Ace?

Just go to a table in Vegas and ask the people there to teach you. I'm sure they'll be full of useful hints.

There are a lot of variables including seat position, style of other players, tournament vs cash play, etc.

The best thing to do is read up on the subject. Doyle Bruson's book Super System is always a good place to start.

I've read a few books and have played for about a year, just thought it was an interesting topic.

Interesting topic, but hard to answer due to the many variables already pointed out.

Personally, I usually play a full table cash game at the casino. If I think I can limp in, I usually try and do so with any two cards. If I'm on the button and no one's raised, I will raise without even looking at my cards. I hate mid-pocket pairs as I always have a hard time playing them. I love playing pocket 2's, 3's, 4's, 5's, because if you hit your set, odds are you're going to get paid off in a big way. Favorite starting hand is usually any sort of suited connector, J10 or better. I don't play with any sort of system, I'm good at math but never bother calculating the odds, and I don't really care about pot-odds which is why I'll probably never move up in limits, but that's perfectly fine with me. I play for fun first, money second.

When I was in Vegas, I would win a ton of money playing blackjack, and I would lose it all at the poker tables. Usually it's the other way around. I was playing at MGM and I found the players to be pretty weak (I only lost because the two times I played were at like 4am and I was drunk and exhausted... I played a third time and won what I lost back thankfully) whereas the players at my local casino are a lot stronger as they are 'ringers' and pretty much live in the poker room.

I posted in the gambling thread that the worst thing that ever happened to me in terms of poker was turning my $50 into $500. Well the second worst thing that happened to me was making the final table in my first ever live tournament.

Ahh, all this poker talk is making me want to go to the casino now.

great topic but once you play Hold'Em for awhile you need to try Omaha:D

I am gonna play an Omaha event this year at the wsop for the first time...In Hold em learn to count your outs and play the math then build off that...I am a very aggressive player in a cash game because when you come from playing BJ at $10k a hand avg its easy to bluff $5k or less. Most of my game though is getting read on other people in the pot and pushing them off the hand with timed aggression....Unless they are like me and will chase a draw if the odds are right.

great topic !!! Im not a pro but Ive won a couple tourneys in atlantic city. Like someone already said - alot of variables involved, mainly position and how much you have in chips. The more chips you have the more intimidating you can be. I love the game !!! The best is when you're sitting with a 7, 2 unsuited and you steal the pot !!!

There's no definite answer to those questions. Poker is a situational game. Important factors are your turn position, the number of players, pot odds, and whether the game in general is loose/tight.
