I'm getting in the mood to get a new system. I have PS2 and only have GT2, but my girlfriend has a bunch of games. I am thinking of a Wii or XBox 360.

I enjoy racing, sports, and sometimes shooter games. My girlfriend likes the "cute" games like Mario, Katamari, stuff like that. I don't mind playing Mario and Guitar Hero, but I really like to play racing and sports. I liked GT2 on PS2 because it was realistic cars that can be modified and you have to pay for it. I once played PGR (can't remember which one) and it was too out of the realm of reality. If there was a Formula 1 game I would be in heaven.

    Nintendo Wii:
Seems pretty neat. Some games seem fun, like the sport ones. However, will I get sick of the boring graphics of cartoon characters? I heard that The Bigs (baseball game) is absolute crap on the Wii. Right now there is a bundle for sale on EB Games. It includes - system, remote, 2 nunchucks, stand, sensor, Wii Sports, Super Paper Mario, Mario Party 8, and Wii Play. All for $420.

    XBox 360:
I don't play live. I use to play Halo in my friends' dorms, but I won't do it from my house. I have NO clue how to set it up. XBox and XBox 360 completely confuse me. Coscto has the XBox 360 bundled with Madden NFL '08. That's OK. I like baseball games, but I also like college and pro-football as well. I've also heard PGR4 has a good selection of Fcars on it. The bundle also comes with 2 wireless controllers, HD and AV cables, 20GB hard drive, ethernet cable, headset, Live Silver, Live 30-day subscription, and quick charge kit. All for $465.

I have no idea what the hard drives are for. I don't need to hook up to online and play with others, download stuff, or play music, pictures, etc. So I could probably just get a console, 2 remotes, and the games I want.

I just want a system that I will enjoy playing with myself or others in the same room. Something that I won't feel like I will grow out of.

Would the Wii or XBox 360 be the better choice? Initially I thought I could cope with the Wii if my girlfriend really loved it (and we split the cost). But I'm starting to lean to the XBox 360 for the graphics and games. I think the Wii novelty of doing actual motions is wearing off. So I think I might get burnt out on it. I'm not sure. But I want something that could be fun for both of us.

Keep in mind, she has every system except the prior 2 mentioned and PS3. She has all the Paper Marios and Mario Parties up through the Game Cube.

Go with the XBOX 360. You will want the hard drive, as that is the only way you can save your games. I don't picture any car games coming out for wii anytime soon.

Easy. If you are older than 12 then go with the 360!! :D Nintendo has always geared their games towards kids/family, IMO.

I have a Wii, and several friends have the 360, which I share quite a bit.

The Wii, great for friends, family and getting together type of things. The graphics, while not the very best, are still not too bad. They are not cutting edge, but the gameplay is more interactive (Resident Evil/Metriod Prime, etc.).

The Wii can reach 480p, while the 360 (Elite only, soon to be outfitted for other 360's) much higher in 1080... make sure it has the HDMI port if you want this!

Katamari is on the 360... still quite fun.

    I have both.

I would say that you may be happier with the XBOX, especially if you dont try a Wii an spoil yourself :)

The thing about the XBOX, PS3 or any others is that learning a game and getting good at it is often times just about learning to make the best of the crap controller. Do you ever play first person shooters on the PC? If you have, then played the same game on an XBOX, PS2, XBOX360, PS3 and you will see the control is crap. Halo 3 - great visually, the control sucks. Same with gears of war - good game, control sucks.

For driving games, you can get a wheel and pedals which will make the control good - but there's nothing that can help with the crap control of the FPS games.

On the other hand, the Wii control is so intuitive an easy to use. When you play Metroid Prime 3 its awesome - if you want to shoot at something, you point to it and shoot. You don't move the joytstick until the cursors line up and oops, you overshot it so you have to back up a bit, etc. You can focus on playing the game and having fun rather than trying to fight a controller that isn't letting you do what you want to do effectively.

The Monster Truck game for Wii is amazingly fun and the control is awesome.

Personally I think most people that bash the Wii haven't ever really played one for a period of time. Play a game like Metroid on Wii with it's interface and it makes playing Halo 3 like going back to the original Castle Wolfenstein and using the arrow keys to move around. Its that big a difference.

The bottom line is the Wii is the party system, the best choice if you have people over. They will play it for hours on end. It has far superior control to anything else -with the exception of a good wheel and pedals in a racing game on the XBOX. The XBOX360 has superior graphics by far and the whole XBOX live thing is better than the PS3/Wii setup. Like I said don't try playing any FPS stuff on the Wii because it will seriously spoil you when you go back to the crap control of the other systems.

I literally can't get into Halo, Gears of War or many others because using the Wii makes you see how bad the control is for most other systems.

Ok you completely lost me there. I assume you are talking pixels, and what is the HDMI port? Does it connect from the XBox to the TV? Where and how does it connect? I don't have an HDTV so maybe that is the problem. Also, what is the difference between the regular 360, the Elite, and the Pro?

Everyone, thanks for the input so far! I'm taking it all into consideration. The only computer game I played was Castle Wolfenstein. So I really don't know anything about controllers being capable of being outperformed by computer controllers. Although, I don't doubt it. I would say that the amount and intensity that I would be playing FPS games would not be a big enough attraction to sway which way I choose.

So it sounds like this is the dilemma:

Do I go with a system that is a party center, or a system that offers realistic graphics and more mature audiences?

Just talking things out here, I probably won't have many people coming over to play the system either way. I'm 23, just graduated, moved back into my home state, and may be relocating due to a job, so I won't have many (if any) friends for a while.

On the graphics, if you do not have a HDTV, then its going to display at 480 lines. If you get an HDTV in the future, the XBOX and PS3 can do High-Def and you get a better picture. The best type of connection between the game system and the TV for high-def is called HDMI. The original XBOX360 did not have it. The XBOX360 Elite does have it. If you dont care about High-def (HDTV) then you don't need it, but it's nice to have if you might get an HDTV in the future.

As for the control, its not so much whether you have a reference point of a PC being good and XBOX being bad - just that the Wii has far superior control to the others. For me, I dont like memorizing keystrokes in PC games because I dont find it fun (like those games that expect you to remember a puzzle from before). I also dont find it entertaining to be fighting a controller - to try to make it do what I want. I find the control on the XBOX and PS to be inferior by far.

If you will be playing racing games, its really not an issue because you can get a wheel and pedals that will make the control great. If you like racing games, I would say the XBOX360 is the way to go. If you like to sit on the bed in your underwear and just play a game while you lie down, the XBOX360 is the one to get. If you like good visuals again the XBOX360 will deliver better. I just personally think the Wii offers a far more interactive experience, especially in groups. Some games (especially Metroid Prime 3) are substantially better in fun factor than games like Halo 3 (IMO).

Based on what you have said, I would say to get the XBOX360. The Wii is only $250 so you can always get it later if you like. If you dont care about HDMI/High-def then you can save some $$ and not bother with the Elite edition of the XBOX360.

SRT Mike, thank you for your in-depth observations!

The price tag of the Wii is really what is keeping it as a contender; that and the very interactive experience. I am almost positive my girlfriend would enjoy the Wii's interaction and games. She doesn't like sports in real life so why would she like it in video games? The thing is, since we are a long distance relationship, she has all the consoles. I have a PS2 at my place but she has one as well. So I'm thinking maybe I can get the system that I really want and have it with me for a change.

And Mike, like you said, for $250 we can always get the Wii later. Of course, I could trade in my PS2 and extra controllers for credit to the Wii.

    I 've got both.

360 is for serious gaming the wii for fun. The standard 360 according to my tv puts out 720i and looks amazing. It's to the point where better graphics just aren't needed IMO. When i run HD from my cable box i can't tell a difference from using the HDMI or the component cables. I'd say the standard 360 would be the best bet unless you just had to have the 1080i.

Another approach might be to get a gamecube used for like $40 or $50 dollars in addition to a 360 and play all the mario stuff on there instead of $200 for the wii.

BTW: The game motorstorm on the PS3 is one of if not the best driving/racing game i've ever played. They have a new formula 1 game that looks awesome too.

PS3 and wait for GT5 to come out, it will be well worth it.

I'm currently playing GT4 on my PS2 and you can easily play that game alone forever.

XBOX 360 and Forza 2. Sounds like you don't like arcade racing and therefor Forza is the game you want. Not PGR.

Or wait for Gran Turismo 5 and get the PS3.

If you want to play a racing game, you should not buy the Wii. It simply will not have anything on the level of Forza 2 or GT5.

    In my opinion

xbox 360 has better sports games like NHL or football etc... but all the racing games and shooting are still really good.
the ps3 is starting to get alot better games from what i have seen.

the xbox 360 and the ps3 are pretty close to me now.

I have both. If the PS3 wasn't also a pretty good Blu-Ray player I would've ebayed the sucker sometime ago.

Graphics are a toss up, they're both great.

The 360 can be loud going full-tilt, but it's NOWHERE near as loud as the PS3 going full-tilt.

To me everything seems nicer, smoother, more refined with the PS3 from the controller to the menu to the looks of the machine. But, for some reason I can't discern, I just don't like it as much as the 360. I want to, because it feels like the better product, but I can't because it just doesn't "do it" for me. The 360 is much more enjoyable for me to play and xbox live is unbeatable. Maybe that's all it is, the xbox live. Playing by yourself or with your buddies gets old in short order. The ability to hop on line and play with a group of people you've never met before for short or long periods is just wonderful.

PS3 sounds like it will definitely be improving. However, I really don't think I could justify spending $500 for the system alone. Unless they have dropped down into the XBox price range due to its impopularity and relative debut flop. The one plus would be the ease of the controller and getting use to the system, being that it is still a PS platform.

Ok, now suppose I want to get into XBox Live. How does one go about that? Let's suppose I have cable internet with a wireless router.

Being a total newbie, how do you connect the XBox? How do you go online from the XBox? Again, I am totally in the dark about this stuff.

get the PS3, just because of Gran Turismo. It is awesome and the graphics are insane. The 360 is just a POS that looks cool. It will just end up getting 3 rings of death. Just save yourself from that and get the 60gb or 80gb ps3. the 40gb ps3 isn't backwards compatible anymore.

I have to disagree with you on that one. I have a PS3 and an XBOX360, and I use the XBOX much more than the PS3. I have never had a problem with the reliability of the XBOX. While the graphics on the PS3 are great, they are not too much better. The biggest problem for me is the games, the PS3 barely has any, while the XBOX has plenty, although I am anticipating GT5.

The regular Xbox 360 has 1080 as well correct? The HDMI cable just replaces the multiple cabled component connection with 1 cable, doesn't it?

Get into online PC gaming...it's the real deal. Gaming with a mouse and keyboard both for movement and being able to communicate is a far more immersive and rewarding experience.
