Hey. Just had a new windshield installed on my 1983 Mondial and there is now a gap between the windshield and the body. The original windshield did not have a gap. So does everyone have a gap or no? Installer says the original windshield was installed with too much sealant and there should be a channel for water? He comes tomorrow. Either way he has to touch up the paint that was scratched. Image Unavailable, Please Login

Good to know. I am hoping that is what the windshield guy is going to do. Thanks for the reply.

    BS. Shoddy work.

That's the principal section - disregard the Product names; any professional product will do. The trick is that the finisher is held in place with something you can cut again for a future intervention. And the both ends absolutely need to be sealed to prevent water ingress. Else, rust will eventually appear.

Here a photo of my car's top corner where you can clearly see the offset recess for the glass. You can also see that the windshield corner is too tight compared to the body. And his was an NOS windshield...

The finisher sits in the body-side recess. The gap between the glass and body is holding the adhesive for the finisher. The finisher is sealed waterproof on both sides so that NO water gets below it.

Also, the windshield is held in position near the bottom corners by two 4mm plastic spacers between the cowl recess and the windshield edge, so it doesn't glide down and contacts the cowl while its adhesive sets. If you remove the old windshield carefully, you'll find them.

If the windshield is in contact with the cowl, it will break. Trust me. And it will be sitting too far forward, and the finisher might display the gap you have at the top... These finishers nicely sit in the recess if you assemble things correctly.

See the crack? That's when you miss the spacers and the windshield contacts the cowl. Took a week's driving for the first of many cracks to materialise.

I still have the original windshield in place - there is no such gap between the trim and the pillar. There is a rubber sealant in between, certainly the polyflex stuff Urs showed in his drawing.
