My current Genie garage door opener will need replacing soon. It has been a good one, but electronic devices have evolved rapidly in recent times, and I have no idea what is considered to be a good garage door opener at this time. Desired strong points are probably obvious: quiet operation, reliability, ...what else? Maybe economical power usage?

It is such a basic, utilitarian item, but I just don't want to end up with what those in the know concerning such matters might refer to as the "Fireatarter 3000" or something like that, IYSWIM.

    TIA!

edit -- I hope this is the appropriate sub-forum for this -- seems closer than any of the others, at least. :D

I really like the Liftmaster series using a belt drive. They are very quiet compared to any chain / screw drive openers. They have anew remote series that has a light purple learning button that is supposed to be better at avoiding copycat openers. Figure on about $300 installed per opener.

Thanks. It seems the prevalent names in the industry are Genie, Liftmaster, Craftsman, and maybe Wayne-Dalton. Unfortunately, the web hasn't proven too useful in comparing them, so your opinion is greatly appreciated.

Probably all the major brands have good openers. My local company prefers the Liftmaster series. The belt drive is the key for a quiet operator. You would also be surprised to find the do it yourself style openers don't save you more than maybe $50-100 compared to a professionally installed opener. Go with the pros on this job!

Isn't there a "home renovation" section here?

Not that I'm aware of, no (unless it's a sub-sub-forum somewhere?). But then, that's not a really Ferrari-related subject, so I'm not that surprised.

If you want a great garage door opener, check out the Wayne Dalton idrive. I just had 4 of them installed in my new construction home.

Some great features of the opener. WHISPER QUIET. I can't even hear the door open from the other room. Mounts on the torque spring (or torsion) but it is "wall mounted" up above your door so you don't have the garage door opener hanging down from the ceiling. Great if you ever plan on putting in a lift, gives you additional headroom. And the best thing of all, completely wireless! No wires run to the wall mounted switch, and has a wireless light which can be placed anywhere in the garage (plugged into an outlet). I have all 4 of my opener lights linked together so when I open one door they all turn on, giving me a fully lit garage. Cost is reasonable, I bought mine on Ebay for around $250 each? About $400 from a retailer I believe....but don't quote me on that

+1 on the idrive. When I spec'd my new home I had dedicated outlets put above the doors just for them (builder would not install). Anyway, still don't have them as the house came with functional quiet systems, but as soon as they go, its idrive baby.

We gotta Chamberlain belt drive. It works nice. Has a motion sensor on the panel in the garage so you don't have to flip the light on all the time. It's quiet too. Haven't had any experience with that idrive but it looks nice.

Lowes and Home Depot are running an installation special right now. Our garage door opener cost $269 installed. We saved $70 or so on the installation.

I have had Genie, Craftsman and Wayne-Dalton. The Genie I would avoid, it didn't last very long. The WD is more difficult to install. I go with Craftsman and only chain or belt drive. No screw drives for me.
