I have read many nightmare stories about garage floor paint, although it sounds as though if your installation and prepwork are meticulous it may be the best choice. I have been somewhat drooling over Griot's garage floor tiles (www.griotsgarage.com). Then I discovered an option at Costco.com (http://www.costco.com/Browse/Productgroup.aspx?Prodid=11004805&whse=&topnav=&cat=1638&hierPath=114*1638*)

Price seems right, but I don't know how it compares to Racedeck, etc. Interesting idea for a nice surface to park the Ferrari on, though.

How do these tiles handle water? Meaning, I sometimes wash the car in the garage out of the sun etc. and would want something that dries rather quickly. Just a thought.

Just saw that myself today. For a couple of hundred bucks, it sure seems worth a try. Were they available in the store? No, I don't think so, but you can always return them to a store if you don't like them.

Just did a google on Motofloor, and it landed me at www.racedeck.com. If it's the same stuff, this is a pretty darn good deal.

How good is the fit on the tiles? If you spill some oil, will it creep between the cracks easily? I don't want to have to take the floor apart every time some liquid spills on it.

$2.70/sf is a good price - though you can probably negotiate that direct with the vendors if you're lucky and pushy. but you don't get a local return policy, for sure.

these tiles are not watertight at their seams - by any stretch. HOWEVER, pulling them apart to clean underneath is not a big deal at all. i went with kiwi over racedeck (four years ago?) because in my tests (way back then) the kiwi seemed to fare better in connect, disconnect, connect tests vis-a-vis longevity of the connectors. i was able to snap racedeck connectors very easily. i reported this to them, and i would assume they've robust-i-cized their product since. they'll all send you samples - just ask.

and if you live where it snows, the perforated tiles make a TON of sense.

i'm a huge fan. i don't think i'd ever consider painting my garage floor. i've heard WAY too many horror stories of lifting and adherance (sp) issues. tiles are definitely more expensive - but i already own them now, and when i move i take 'em with me!

I went with 18" porcelain tiles in my garage. In my opinion much more expensive look, easy cleanup, and best of all it's permanent, no maintennance, except for sweeping and occaisionaly I hose it down and squeegee dry. Painting the floor has to be redone , the interlocking tiles water creeps under.

Black and white tiles........you may want to consider something a little different. The checkered flag pattern is way overdone and and the black and white tiles don't look so nice when they get dirty.

I actually found a really good replica of RaceDeck at Lowe's Home Improvement store. Prices were obviously very reasonable and the finished product looks really good. They are really easy to clean to, soap and water with a towel does the job quite well.

At 2.70sq ft you can go marble here! Am I the only one missing that?

Sindo, I am with you. Did mine with porcelan tiles. No sweat. Installation 1 sq ft and the product was $ 1.00 sq ft. I am still looking for the right ones for the warehouse (1000sq ft).

As I said at $ 1,75 you get marble floors here in Miami. Install is another 2 bucks, thats almost as much as the snap plastic crap will cost me. It look slike a Million Dollars compared and cleans with a broom.

If you want to go really high end take slate. Just bought slate for $ 1.75 for one of our guest bathroom remodels. Installs like marble.

I just can not bring myself to installing $ 3.75/sq ft in floor in a warehouse/showroom. Maybe if I do my warehouse project here in North Miami and all the things work out just right.

You can get a good grade V porcelain tile for about 2.50 in a 16x16. Add another couple of bucks per square foot to lay. it does look great. I have it in most of my house. Fi you go with a highly polished glazed tile it will be slippery when wet. If you go with a tumbled finish it will get dirty easy and would stain easier also.
I had the painter epoxy paint my garage when I built it three years ago.
It has held up perfect so far. I just hose it down and squeegee it off.
I like the checkerboard black and white look but I don;t want to be out in the garage cleaning it all the time. I imagine that it needs to be cleaned frequently or the white would look dirty all the time.

The race deck cleans up easily with a mop. I had a local rep install, as the cutting around cabinets was more than I wanted to mess with. Have lived with it since February and very happy about look and maintenence.

i think if you pay that much for it the floor better be maintenance free. pulling them apart and cleaning underneath is not something that most people would want to do.

You dont have to worry about pulling them up and cleaning underneath them. I never have and I have had mine for 3 years now. I have spilled oil, brake fluid, antifreeze and OOPS 3+ gallons of gas once when draining the tank.

Just mop it up and move on, the tiles fit close enough that it leaks thru slowly and you can mop up almost all of it if you are quick and if not, they are channeled underneath to allow ventilation and they will dry. I didn't even pull them up when we got flooded last year (did you know they float and that was weird walking on them in 5 inches of water).

I work in my garage so my tiles get really dirty and I scrub them clean a few times a year (probably twice a year is my average so far). Be careful when you walk into my garage, if you complain that my garage floor is dirty, I will hand you the mop.

It is only a garage after all, its supposed to be worked in. When clean it sure makes the cars and bike look GOOD :)

we all drive ferraris. listen to ourselves going on about an extra buck a square foot ;)

    two other snappy-tile benefits:

    * the delta pays for itself the first time you move.

    * the delta pays for itself the first time you change your mind about what design you want.

    diff'rent strokes and all that!

My garage is concrete. It has several nice designs from spilling and leaking things on it. The install was about $0 per sq. ft., and took virtually no time to lay. Even in the corners, it fits perfectly. It doesn't lift, peel or need soap to clean. I also didn't have the agony of choosing which color(s) I would use. I will probably have to leave it when I move, but it should be replaced fairly quickly upon closing on another house.

    :)

FYI, Motofloor at www.costco.com is 30 bucks off this week. Not 120, but 90 for a box of 48 one-foot squares. Is this the good stuff?? This was advertised for AMEX cardholders

+1 for Kiwi Tiles......only drawback with white tiles is the DO get dirty if you don't make a constant effort.

I ended up not going with tiles, but with the Griot's grooved floor mat that covers the length of the garage in one piece. I don't think it's quite as impressive to look at -- although it looks neater than bare concrete -- but you can easily slide the whole thing out of the garage for a thorough wash down, and there are no crevices between tiles to let leaks through.

I'd also think twice about white, unless you really don't drive your car much or wipe the tire treads off every time you pull in.
