I have some work (battery and alternator replacement) to do on my 355 Spider in Dubai, does anyone have any receomendations of garages that have experience of working on ferraris in the UAE? Al Tayer's quote (franchise dealer) takes the piss and I would like to go elsewhere

    In advance, THANKS!

    Robino,

I don't know about Dubai, and I'm sure that a number of Dubai Dwellers will chime in... but I do know that unless you are completely mechanically inept, or simply don't have a place to do it... both can be done fairly easily within an hour/hour and a half... I know because that was the first thing I did on my car (removing, rebuilding and reinstalling the alternator).

This was before I built my garage, so I did it in my parking area in front of the house.

The other option might be any of the small garages that I KNOW are there (just like in Kuwait) that specialize in Electrical work, alternators, etc. It doesn't take a Ferrari garage to do what your needing... just a few tools and a few hours.

Just on the topic of UAE garages, in terms of residential ones, I know people with cars worth 1MM+ and they usually just keep the cars outside. It might be different now but from my memory, a lot more people have carports than garages. No point in a country where it rains once a year.

There is still a point of a proper garage in a country without no rain. The typical weather there is hot and abrasive. That's not really proper for a nice exotic/luxury car.

Its just a habit/culture there. Although most people are now building proper garages. :)

Taxes were a nightmare up to around two years ago, they have cut them now but it's still dear. One of my customers imported a 355 '98 model when it was two years old. The taxes back then were nearly what he paid for the car. He kept it in a bonded warehouse until two years ago when the tax dropped, then pulled it out and paid the duty. They aren't allowed to be charging what they do for import duty, Cyprus is in the E.U so if the tax has already been paid, you shouldn't have to pay it again. They still persist though, because the fines they have to pay the E.U for doing it are tiny compared to what they earn from the tax. There are all sorts of wierd laws, for example, NO modifications are allowed, even wheel/suspension/exhaust upgrades can get you in trouble. I have a stack of "loan" parts to help people out though.

As for not keeping it in a garage, that would definately be a no-go. Searing heat can play havoc with paintwork and interiors, and dust can be unpleasant at times to say the least.

Up until recently, you couldn't bring a LHD car and register it in the country without it costing you a fortune. This has been relaxed a bit now, i have several on my books, mostly classics, three cars are from the U.S.

    Hi RobinO,

Give Alex Renner at AR Motors in Dubai a call. He is a Porsche specialist but I know he is slowly starting to do some Ferraris there. He looks after a GT2 430 Race car, so i would think it is in good hands.

Let us know how you get on. The number for ARM is 04 347 6466
