I got this 1490T on sale at newegg for $99 last week. It's my first portable gps unit so I'm not sure if this is normal for Nuvi's or not. It makes a crackling noise when I input in certain parts of the menu and also before it verbally gives direction the first time for a route.

In the video you can hear it when I press agree to the terms, also right before the lady gives direction, and when I click the back button. Though it may not come through in the video the speaker always makes a hissing noise even when it's not being used, like when you turn speakers up without playing anything. This was at 60% volume setting.

    Are these sounds normal?

Nope. My Garmin that I've had for a couple of years has never made any sounds like that. Can you still return it?

Thanks for the feedback. I wanted to exchange with newegg but they've deactivated my item. I could do a refund but current lowest price online is much higher than what I paid. So I called Garmin and the guy I talked to said they'll replace it with a new one instead of refurbished. Let's see.

Newegg is cool about those kind of things. Never had a problem with them.

They are, but they can't do anything in this situation since they don't stock this item anymore. If I return it for a refund, I'll end up paying at least $40-50 more elsewhere. Considering the options, exchanging with Garmin seems like the best bet if I receive a new like they say.
