I have a 396 that came with my plane, and it is almost like it does too much crammed on that small screen. Yes, I found declutter function, but... just curious on what portable GPS units folks are using and if anyone knows of a little larger screen (not like the new Garmin - what a monster!) and bone simple and reliable. Sometimes this thing is so complicated I miss my wee first generation Trimble from 1989...

    All opinions welcome!

Ok - since that garnered a lot of response, anyone have experience with a Lowrance 2000 C?

Wish that I could help with your question re GPS. The only one that I have used was pretty reliable and I used it many times without fail. It was thin enough to put in the map case of my old army airplane. When unfolded you could see the name Texaco Road Map on it. It worked every time AND it was simple....like the pilot.

Russ, I secretly envy you guys and your expertise in all the new stuff. It is fascinating, very useful, and will save a lot of lives. I recall a conversation with another pilot from the midwest shortly after the war reprimanding me for not using section lines when I got a little bit lost on a X-country in Fla. I never did find ONE section line in the swamps of the Everglades...or anywhere else down there in 1945. GPS would have been wonderful !! However, it wouldn't have shown the huge alligators that awaited me if the noise up front was silenced.

Actually I did have to put down in the "Glades once and I was faced with a huge alligator. It charged me but couldn't bite me. It had A REPTILE DISFUNCTION.

I have a Garmin 296, which I've been quite happy with over the last few years, so I guess I'm not much help.

The 296 did manage to navigate me from Japan to the US, via Russia, so it's a trusted friend now.
