I was watching top gear and they said gas was 8 to 9 dollars a gallon in Brittan. I knew gas was a lot in Europe but thats ridiculous.
Is there anyone from Europe that can confirm this or any other high prices?

    Thanks

If you think our public transport works then yours must realy be bad! :)

At the moment gas in The Netherlands is somewhere between € 1,30-1,40 a liter. That's about 6 dollar a gallon (US). Dutch prices are high because of taxes.

    Ciao, Peter

Well, actually only the UK uses the gallon. The rest uses the liter.

Actually the imperial gallon is slightly larger than the US gallon.

1 UK (Imperial Gallon) is equal to 1.20095 US gallons. About the only thing in Britan that is bigger than in the US.

As an aside, the Liter is slightly larger than the quart:

    1 liter =1.056688 Quarts

So in the US you can just about substitute quarts and liters no problem. (Such as oil capacities--If your Ferrari needs 10 liters that is 10.5 quarts.)

It's between 86 and 90pence per litre so approx $1.51-$1.58 per litre circa $6.30 per US gallon!

And you think running a Ferrari is expensive over there?:D

I can now see why Diesels and other alternitive fuels are so popular in Europe.

80 is a bit much I think, it's more like 60-65 I think (over here in Belgium at least).

BUT about 80-85% of the cars has an manual transmission, beat that you lazy automatic-lovers :p j/k

One of my Jag list friends in the UK is paying $7.86 per US gallon (yes, we did the conversions). Some are paying just above $6 and others are paying close to $7.

When I was stationed in the UK in 2000, I was paying $1.9x on base and $4.75-$5.25 off base.

Most places have absolutely nothing. Get a car, or walk.

But the high fuel price is compensated for by the low prices of cars!

A good example, I've just enquired about buying a Mercedes SL350 in Cyprus (they just joined the EC, Europe) the car costs a mere £58500 (US$103,000)in the UK, in Cyprus it's £108,200 (US$190,000) and the SL500 is US$ 240,000!
I think the current price in the US is 100 dollars and a Big Mac!

Trust me, over here, even Bill Gates would get the bus!

And you wonder why European Ferraris are low mileage?????:D

Here in Hungary (an eastern-most country of European Union) price of fuel is so high that car owner clubs are successfully proposing legislation to force filling-station owners to display the actual gas prices in huge lettering on the roadside pillars.

Two or three years ago the fountains discontinued this practice because the price per liter became shamefully high and motorists turned away when they saw the info. Nowadays the pillars are covered in giant stupid ads...

Currently the price of benzene (95 octane) is circa 275 (varies by 15) HUF per liter (circa 0.9 to 1.1 euro/L) and diesel fuel is marginally cheaper. Some 75% of the price is for taxes (highest % in the EU alongside Germany). Everybody is looking forward to 300HUF per liter by the autumn.

Most of our crude oil is imported via pipes from Russia, a little from arabs via tankerships at Croatian ports and then locally refined, so we cannot avoid economic side effects of international politics (e.g. which oil baron is Mr. Putin sending to the Gulags this week). Looking at the Iraq insurgency and China's growing oil demand many predict here that local fuel price will be like 500HUF/liter by mid-2006. Then we will convert to pedal cars (as in The Flintstones)...

Some 50%+ of all new cars sold in EU are diesels, because they consume very little. Most are stick cars, automatics are preceived to decrease milage by 15% and auto tranny use is considered lame.

P.s.: Saw a red F430 yesterday. The owner probably does NOT visit neighbouring Ukraine to fill up, because quality of gas is dubious there. But many of local everyday car owners do, because fuel is almost half-price there. It is a hungarian national game to smuggle fuel from neighbours, defeating the customs. (Fuel is cheap in Ukraine because tax is less there and they steal a lot from russian owned crude pipelines).

Just had to point out that 'gas' is actually sold by the litre in the UK too, yet we still talk about "miles per gallon" in the pub.

(89.9pence / litre at the petrol station near my house)
