This is for the 355 community that has that blasted gas door problem . Wont open with the cockpit swicth , have to get open with the emergency latch in the engine compartment.

    1) remove Left rear tire
    2) remove radiator exit/ well shroud ( like 6 screws and one nut on the diffuser)
    3) remove pper wheel well shroud ( again like 5 or 6 screws )
    4) locate wire connection to solenoid , unplug . Take a sharp probe and press down on the lock on the solenoid side , this will release the contact . Clean with 220 grit sandpaper . reinstall. remove one at a time . not both . remove the other and do the same.
    5) test! Viola ! it works ! imagine that ?!?!
    6) reunstall.

Total about 1 hour cause im really carefull and liek to clean as i go !

I also inspected the left engine cover and components while i was down here , including the stock Ferrari exhuast pipes for cracks. Mine has been replaced and look to be in good condition.
noticed some blowby off the left PCV hose.

I also cleaned the plastic well liners with bug and tar remover , and then blasted em with Tire shine . Boy now thats shiny!

Thanks , hope this was helpfull cause this was a easy fix!

My gas cover lid solenoid was sticking and a while back I put some lubricant on it. That was probably a mistake as now it really sticks and won't retract. I have to pull really hard on the emergency release and once it pulls in it won't go back out... so I have to use pliers to pull it out so the gas cover will stay closed.

Should I try to clean out or buy a new solenoid? Is it very easy to clean & should that fix it? Unfortunately, part # 65424200 costs around $660. Is the part available under a different brand? Thx!

Mine is doing kind of the same thing. It will open with the push button but then will not come back out to latch the door closed. I have to work it out with a set of needle nose. I am going to pull it out this weekend and see if I can figure out what's sticking. It's in the solenoid part for sure on mine. I'll take pictures and let you know how it goes.

My would not open when I bought the car. I sprayed a little WD-40 on it and it's worked fine ever since.

Mine was stuck when I bought my car last year so I removed it and sprayed some wd-40. That lasted for a good 6 months and then started to stick again so I bought some graphite powder and rubbed all over the pin... I'm not sure if this going to work since I now have the car parked for winter.

I drive my 355 quite a bit so the gas lid gets quite a bit of use, that's probably why mine is working flawlessly. Compared to my previous Maserati that only opened about 40% of the time; which was quite embarassing when you're sitting at a gas pump in your fancy vehicle and spend 5 mins trying to open the freaking gas lid.

Sorry to be thick here, but what exactly are you spraying when you say you "removed it and sprayed some wd-40 on it?"

    thanks.

I fixed mine a couple weekends ago. I'll try to attach the pics but i'm not sure I know how.
I removed the solenoid. I was hoping it was one I could take apart and clean but it's not it's pressed together. I worked it back and forth a thousand times spraying with WD-40 but it would not stop sticking. I finally just let it soak in my parts washer for awhile, I figured I can't hurt it if it's already broke. That got all the gummy/sticky out of it. and I worked in a bunch of air tool oil a drip at atime. It seems to be working slick for now.

I removed the solenoid as in the above pic and lubed up the locking pin.

Is this something that can be accomplished just by spraying the pin from inside the gas cap housing, or does one really need to remove the solenoid entirely?

    Completely off topic. But...

In that third picture, what is the image the solenoid is laying on? Is that your workbench with an image of a 335 engine inlay????? < c o o l >

Mine sticks too. Does this part have a cross-reference? Not sure how much the part is for Ferrari but maybe used in another car out there like a Fiat or something?

Noticed the plastic gas cap. My 95 has a billet aluminum cap. I assumed all 355's had the aluminum cap. Was this an option or did the factory put on what ever was at hand for that particular car??

I wondered about that too. It is a 97 and that is the cap that was on there when I got it. May have been replaced by the previous owner with this one??

I really tried and tried to get mine working while it was still in the car with lube, but it was just too gummed up. I had to pull it. It really doesn't take a lot to get out. Keeping with the original topic of this thread I also made sure the contacts were good and clean when I put it back in.

Don't worry. I'm sure a replacement aluminum one is available for only a token fee.

Token amount is right. Dealers list price for the aluminum cap is $600. My original cap's rubber gasket had become "un-glued" so the dealer sold me a new one without doing the obvious - just re-glue it, Duh. They took pity on me though as the car was in for a major and "only" charged me $300 as they were already very deep in my wallet.

I sold my old one for $150 to a guy in Portland so that helped.

This is my problem also: the black rubber gasket inside my billet gas cap has detached from the cap itself and usually sticks to the gas tank neck. Not critical, but annoying.

Any DIY workarounds? Or can I at least just buy the black rubber gasket somewhere?

I've also read somewhere that if the gasket is not secure enough it can set off CELs and other annoyances.

    thanks
