Hi, Smelled gas while driving & looked around in the trunk for possible leaks - pic enclosed - Is there anywhere I should check first? Pls note the stain near the left flange(?) in center.

Separate issue: Anyone know where to source the missing AC intake grill? (Pic)

    Thanks,

My 400 developed a fuel smell in the trunk area. There is a aluminum cover over the fuel inlet pipe. Also in this area difficult to see is a vent line, mine was clear plastic flexible tubing. Over the years this tubing had shrunk and pulled away from the metal fitting, the cause of my fuel smell and leak. I replaced this turbing with fuel proof sugical tubing and alls well, smell gone as well as the fuel leak.

    Just sayin'

    STEP AWAY FROM THE CAR!

Seriously, check the fuel lines from the fuel pump into the carbs.
If the fuel tube hose is braided and the fuel rail is solid metal, the ball type connectors could be loose. Also plastic hoses at the tank connected to the fuel pump could have become hard and brittle, allowing fuel vapor to escape as they no longer have a form fitted seal at either end.

Whatever else you do, make sure you discharge static electricity from your body before you reach for any of these components. Liquid fuel is hard to ignite, but fuel vapor just needs a tiny spark

    I too fought this issue.
In my case there were two major leaks.
The first and most obvious was the fuel sender gasket. It was hard as a rock and leaking. A $7.50 gasket fixed that. The in trunk photo shows the effect of this leak.
The second took a while to figure out. The tanks are aluminum and mine had developed several pin holes. We fixed the leaks with an aircraft fuel tank sealer (from the outside) and the smell is gone. The under car photo shows the extent of the tank leaks and what to look for.
There is a long thread detailing this process. <http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/365-gt4-2-2-400-412/355743-trunk-fuel-smell.html>

Found the Driver's side top AC Grill inside the opening - just can't figure out how to install it in the opening. Has 2 cross bars in the back to grip the inside edge of the console, but I've no idea how to get it in there and "slide" the grips in place - will take some thinking..ugh.

Re Fuel leak: Gotta leak in the fuel RTN lines where fuel returns to engine - low pressure I understand - the fabric portion shows fuel on it where it leaves the trunk on the left side - will replace but no drips yet. Did drip underneath car, left side facing car when I started after 5 days of no driving - confirmed loose and tightened that band underneath car.

    Thanks,

And f you look closely you'll see the offending grill inside the opening...good grief! I figured out this needs to be affixed from the inside. I'm not waiting for Maranello to call and offer me a Chief Mechanic position.
