I have a '79 308. What are the gas tubes called that keep the rear trunk lid from closing? I need to replace them....is there a low cost alternative?

Do a search on gas struts; there's been quite a bit of discussion regarding the subject over the years.

    To sum up, however...

Some people have had their original struts recharged at the cost of around $70 each. You send your gas struts to a Canadian company, they recharge them and send them back. This has the benefit of maintaining the little "horsey" on the struts.

Others have had luck finding "close-enough" replacements at auto parts stores (Autozone, Pep Boys, Napa, etc.). Typically the cost of such struts is from $20 to $50 each. Note that I tried doing this when replacing the struts on my Mondial and didn't have any luck.

You can also go the eBay route. Expect to pay around $40 per strut. (This is the route I went when replacing the struts on my Mondial.) These struts, while OEM fitting, will not have the little "horsey" on them.

I've read about people buying struts from respectable sources (Ricambi, Ferrari dealership, etc.). These seem to be the same struts as purchased from eBay and do not have the little "horsey" on them, although the box they come in may be pretty.

Last, but not least, is the broom handle fix, which seems pretty popular.

As I posted earlier, I replaced my originals with a pair of Sachs bougth from UK and I am very happy with them.
Keeping the original struts just because...but they are shot, and to recharge is too much $$
I still have a pair of the new Sachs units, which I ended up buying accidentaly, and it is for sale for the 62 Pounds I paid, or $100 US.
    Cheers.
