Shell offers fingerprint scan payment for gas.

Shell customers are being hit with a trifecta of technological advances, including the ability to pay by fingerprint. The payment system is faster and more secure than using a credit card, debit card or RFID key fob, Shell says. After an initial scan of the customer's finger and credit card, all other transactions take place at the pump.

You better make sure you're not wanted by the FBI. Wouldn't it be easier to just have an inserted micro chip rather than having to worry about all those germs? ;)

They better add a PIN code, or thieves will be "ripping off" peoples' fingers.

If not literally, then figuratively -- you could be subject to identity theft by tossing away a water bottle you handled without gloves, allowing people to recreate your fingerprints.

The old security mix: "what you have plus what you know".

Banks and government want us to become a cashless soicety. Banks want to make a couple of percent on every transaction and government wants to know your every move. Screw 'em both and pay cash. Helps out the business and protects your privacy.

I have a friend who's been in this field for 10 years, she says once the technology becomes more stable/ foolproof it will be everywhere.

Just think about how much money goes into protecting against fraud each year? How much money goes into insurance?

I use cash whenever I can. Less hassle, fewer signatures, zero risk of identity theft, anonymity... the list goes on.

I had a contact infection (verruca vulgaris) on my index finger once. Now cured completely.
I think this method is not sanitary.

if this is not sanitary, then do you put gloves on to operate the pump and open doors? It can't be any worse than that.

    Team,

Sorry, but both fingerprint scanners and retna scanners by themselves can easily be defeated. The yearly computer show in Germany (CEBIT) had hackers who showed exactly how to do this. It was even televised. Even DNA scanners (sweat) can be fooled with little effort.

The one "scanner" they could not fool with even a whole bunch of $ and effort was a signature pressure scanner. We each sign our signature in a unique way that for all pratical purposes cannot be forged. We use varying degrees of pressure at different intervals when signing our names. This pressure signature of our written signature is almost impossible to forge.

I'll stick with cash for the time being.

The signature one is tricky, a lot of people don't have a "routine" signature... like me.

Some (but not all) of our local Shell stations already are making you input your zip code when you use a card.

Some (again not all) of them also have this really irritating voice-box on the pump that starts up jabbering about their convenience store junk while you fill up. It takes about 30 seconds to shut it up with the mute button, which does not always work.

So my question is - are they very far away from forcing you to use this thing even if you just want to slide your regular card? Or is it a sort of "cardless" option?

Yes, an alternative at this point. They are warming us up to this biometric technology. Other biometric strategies are being developed such as those based on gait (way of walking), retina, hand veins, ear recognition, facial thermogram, DNA, odor and palm prints.

DisneyWorld has been using biometrics for years. They scan the bone structure of your fingers in addition to swiping your pass.
