I really enjoy watching the affects of advertising on the public. I went to Lowe’s today to buy some light bulbs, and across the aisle was the display of gas grills. These were consumer grade items priced to about $1000. I’m well aware of the high end gas grills in the $4000-$5000 range.
I took a few minutes to watch folks (of obvious average means) looking at these things and buying them.

Here’s the question: There can be no doubt (can there?) That ANYTHING taste better on a $79 charcoal grill than ANYTHING on even a $5000 gas grill, why do we buy these things?*

Why do people pay $5000 for something inferior to a simple charcoal grill that costs $79?

*Disclaimer: I was a purist for many years and NEVER used a gas grill, but about 10 years ago, I rationalized that a gas grill was so much easier that I’d use it more, and that has proven to be true, so, yes I do have a gas grill, but I’m not proud of it.

Ease of use, I imagine. That and the fact you don't stink of charcoal smoke for days :).

That being said, I'm about to go out into the garden and fire up the ol 'charcoal. Give me that every time.

I go with the Ol' Smokey with charcoal and mesquite blocks.
I have a small and large one of those.

THEN for the manly man cook outs, I have A Texas Fire Pit, an industrial strength unit from Texas by Design in Dripping Springs. Check 'em out on line.

The 30" model with a 24" grill will handle most anything!!!
And it's the SMALL one in the catalog!!!

$425.00 got it to my door, delivered by the man that built it!!
Valeria really liked it. It was her Christmas present, for the patio.

The food i grill on my (practically)free open stone fireplace in my backyard tastes better than the stuff grilled on a $79 charcoal grill. the 'cost' of that was some cement to rebuild it a few years ago, and the wood i have to split for it.
With that said, unless i plan on hanging around by a fireplace for a while, the gas grill is more convinent. It can be ready to grill in a few minutes where with the fire you must wait until the wood turns to hot coals.
Does anyone here have a smoker? How does the food outof that taste? I might consider making one.

It's pretty simple really. I can't cook a 14 oz filet on charcoal, it would take all day. On my infra-red gas grill, it takes 10 minutes or less. It sears the outside, it doesn't just heat it.

I've never been able to taste a difference between charcoal and gas.

I voted gas just because of ease of use. I also can't taste any difference between the two, and it's always great when it is sooooo easy.

Charcoal or hardwood all the way. I have heard the siren call of ease of use, but I have lashed myself to my Weber and plugged my ears with wadded up newspaper.
You want ease of use, cook it in the kitchen.

Grilling is about ritual, appreciation of the finer things in life.
Were you aware that the time to drink a beer and the time for the coals to get ready to cook are the same? Coincidence? Not a chance! Its divine providence I say!

One of my favorite things is to put a large brisket or Pork shoulder on the Weber at 7 in the am. Then I spend all day tending the fire and shooting the breeze with friends and neighbors. Around 6 at night you have some died and gone to heaven good eatin'

It is also proof against honeydews. "Honey I really would like to help with the laundry but I have to turn the brisket" Sorrry, I have to go add charcoal to the fire......

Charcoal is so much fun. It reminds me of the years I spent in Africa.
