    I have started my 30000 mile service (83 308) and the old gaskets on the cam cover and the head do not seem to want to go. What is the best way to remove the gaskets without damaging anything? I am just about to pull the cams, put on new cam seal gaskets, and start getting this thing back together. Oh yea, what is the torque values for the cam cap nuts? Thanks in advance. Well, off to the garage to come up with another question or 2!

    The last shop that removed the valve covers on my car went crazy with sealer which took a lot of work to remove. I used Permatex Gasket Remover and a fine "nylon wool" type polishing pad. Here are a few pics of the product and results. As far as the tightening torqe for the caps - it's very low, around 8-10 Nm, but check your WSM to be sure.

    the tightening torque for cam bearing caps = 6:1/2 ft. lbs or = 78 in lbs .

    No, 9 ft-lbs is more like 12-13 Nm

    Hey guys, thanks for the help. The gasket remover did the trick Shan. Still had to use way to much elbow grease though.

    I just made them using Aramid gasket material from McMaster Carr. Premium Aramid with buna binder.

    I have not reinstalled the engine yet so I have no idea how it works.

    I am pretty sure that any leaks would be at the oil seals and not from the gasket itself.

    Cheap set of punches from Harbor Freight, scissors and exacto knife all it took.

    Problem is, I live in Belguim. So McMaster Carr....have no clu. Any website information to order it by mail ? Let me know if it works without leaks,ok. Thanks , Guido
