My 1998 550 has developed a gasoline leak. I filled up the tank to the brim today. After driving it home for a few miles I noticed a gasoline stain on the floor. There was a substantial leak underneath, on the right side, near the rear right hand wheel. After a couple of hours, the leak has subsided much, but there are still a few drops coming out every minute. The tank is almost full still. I have never had this problem. I have owned the car since new. Being a weekend, I could not find a garage to take a look at the car. What is my best course of action? What is the likely fault? Is it safe to drive it? Thanks.
Park it outside so the fumes in the garage will not create a fire hazard and have it towed to your shop Monday. Without knowing the source of the leak it is impossible to know if it is safe but any gas leak is inherently unsafe.
are you sure you have a leak? If you filled it to the brim, then maybe a bit of expansion (it's cold in those underground tanks) has forced it out? Park it in a different position and see if any more comes out - if not, then you may not have a problem.
The leak has now stopped, it seems completely. So, may be it was just, as suggested, expansion. The car drove fine and seems fine otherwise. Should I check for any damage? I've read that it is possible, https://www.angieslist.com/articles/car-myth-or-fact-should-you-top-your-gas-tank.htm Does this apply to this car?
I would abide by Rifledriver’s advice and error on the side of caution. Get it checked out. The downside is not good. Maranello’s are getting older and there are known issues with fuel leaks as these cars age, both 550’s and 575’s. As for filling the car to the absolute top after the pump has clicked, Personally I would not. Just one opinion. Bill FL
