Interested in the car's history (once a car sells for heavy bread, it seems to attract my attention. Has it ever been in a feature story on how Victor Gauntlett, ex-chairman of Aston, found it in the U.S. in the 1980s and where? (I know it spent time in Beirut but apparently it was in the US that it suffered a fire and became tatty).
Maybe it was because someone contact Aston for a rebuild as it had an engine fire. I guess it's hard to calculate how much it cost him to restore it because he could get all that labor and parts for free compared to us ordinary blokes.
Apparently its late owner, Hans-Peter Weidmann (maybe of Germany?) bought the car while it was still in mid-restoration at Aston. I don't know who owned it when it fetched the huge price at Bonhams. $4.29 million, which seems an outsize amount to me. Of course factory restored, you can't get better than that (or maybe you can) and early Giugiaro could explain that price. This makes the Bertone swb ex-Bill Karp car seem like it should be worth even more as it's a Ferrari (oh oh, Aston owners won't like that.)
Anyhow like to know whoever bought it from the Weidmann estate paid for it though of course I know the restoration costs can't be separated out from the fact that when the restoration started, Gauntlett owned Aston Martin at the time. Basically just want to know if this car, during its distressed period in america, was ever a bargain.

Iam quite familiar with this GT chassis # 0201/L Was not aware that Victor was involved with. Saw it in the mid 80's at a shop in San Francisco with brake problems, but the real culpret was the body rust-you could see through the doors. It was then owned by Dr. Stemmer and I was at that time buying every Gt offered. I chased this one for several months and at one time I had a telephone commitment from Stemmer for its purchase, which never materialized-he simple vanished. The next time that I saw it was in 1986 in Newport Pagnel service departmen and later at Shapecraft in Northampton then again in the early 90's at pebble beach-then owned by HP Weidman from Switzerland. It was and is one of my all time favorite DB 4/GT's.
