    Ben, if you are referring to those white " tubes" going up over the wing they are condensation in the vortices coming off of the strakes on the inboard side of the engine nacelles. You can see exactly what the strakes are doing by diverting airflow over the wing instead of permitting it to form a local stall and draggy turbulence at the juncture of the wing and strut. I hope that this is the item to which you refer.

    You can get vapor trails off of a lot of different parts of the aircraft, in high humidity conditions I like to take shots of the prop trails.

    That 747 image looks like it was taken at Boeing Field in Seattle, and as you can imagine, Seattle has high humidity quite often. (I know, I've lived there!)
