Just got my engine back in the car but am having trouble setting up the gear box to the stick. Has anyone got any tips on the best way to set it all up please?

The 308 section is full of DIY's on how to do this. The mechanism on the 246 is essentially the same so looking there will get you all the photos and explanations you will need.

I personally like to adjust the shifter by removing the drain pain on the transmission. It is the only way to get a perfect setting. Every other method is blind but if you remove the pan, you can see everything and adjust it accordingly.

As a tip, once you set the gearbox up, use some paint to mark the orientation of the shift rod to the input shaft of the gearbox. That way if you have a problem in the future, you can reference these marks to see if the orientation has moved, and it can act as a good reference if you intend on re-assembling the shifter blind without removing the pan.

yes agree, good idea t mark the shaft adjustment when set up. Must do that myself.
also agree best way is to take the gear box sump off and observe what is happening else its all trial and error. Gets a bit messy though, and watch out for the detent springs and ball bearings.

thanks for the help will sort it this weekend. For the record - I actually marked the shaft when the engine was out -on the top surface - as the engine was on the bench. When the engine was back in the car I couldn't see any of the marks from below!!

Is'nt there something about setting the box is second gear before removing so as to keep all things aligned?
