Making my 2000 550 mine by going through all the systems. Started with oil and filters and a full underbody check. All good so far.
Did several searches but could find nothing on my next two issues: Anything unusual about changing the transaxle gear oil?
I'd like to use an engine cleaning agent (Griot's product) but am reluctant, Has anyone had success with full engine bay wash?

Greg- Not sure what you mean about unusual when changing transaxle oil. Should be changed every two years at minimum. Follow the WSM procedure. Free WSM at ferraridatabase.com.

Griot's engine cleaning agent sucks. Do not use it on a Ferrari.

    Taz,
Thanks for your post. I guess your not crazy about the Griot product (glad I asked). Any recommendations?
Is it absolutely necessary to get the gear oil out of the cooler each time, that is getting it hot so it will open. If you did it cold often enough would that be sufficient?

Eric- This is probably the best way to explain it. These are the procedures for the 575M, but the 550 should be identical and the WSM is way better illustrated.

No advice on what to use to clean the engine. Probably best to ask your tech on that. The underbody covers provide a lot of protection for the engine and getting it wet can short out electronic components. My techs usually just blow it off with compressed air.

sounds like no engine wash for me. Will do some hand work and a little compressed air.

If you want to wash grime off the engine, just use a little petroleum and a brush. Some engine cleaners are just that, petroleum in a spray can.
Do *not* use brake cleaner. It seems to oxidise parts later on, especially yellow zinc. Ask me how I know. It is also really bad for you when inhaled - which you will, unless you use a painter's mask.
