Ok...need some opinions here....I've done so much work on my car I'm not sure which variable I've changed to cause the problem. 84 qv, had the clutch out to replace the rear main, and dropped the tranny pan after the rear main was done to reseal it in an futile effort to reduce the leaks. Car used to have Mobil 1 75W-90 in it, however there was none in stock so I replaced it with Valvoline 75W-90 Synthetic. After about 100 miles I developed a VERY loud gear whine (sounds a lot like a turbo or a gear drive) under load only. I imediately drained it and put the Mobil 1 back in, have driven it a few miles (less than 5) and the whine is still there. It only apears while accelerating, it is not present at a steady cruise and is not present while stopped....only under acceleration or load (going up a hill.) Do you think it will slowly go away with time now that the Mobil 1 is back in there, or could I have messed something up in the clutch....ideas?

not that it's any help to either of us, but i had exactly the same whine develop
last spring after changing my gearbox oil. the only difference was it was the 2nd
time i had changed the oil using redline mtl. the 2008 season did not have this whine
    using the same oil.

the whine sounds like a turbocharger spooling up and down with respect to road speed.
mine is heard between 1500-3000rpm while the car is driven. i cannot duplicate
the whine stationary, nor can i duplicate it with the car up on jacks and run in gear.
there must be some load applied to hear the noise.

this has been worrisome although the intensity has not changed in 3000mi.

she is due for her 3yr. major in a couple of weeks. hopefully the noise can be
identified, and hopefully it is nothing serious.

    stay tuned.

Mine has had the gear whine for the last ten years. Rebuilt the trans with the last major. My mechanic says it is normal. I tend to agree as the gears are fairly straight cut. Other 308s I have driven have that same gear whine. Put on a Tubi and you won't hear it any more. LOL

For my car this is not normal...this is the first I've had in 20,000 miles and would prefer not to have it....just making sure Im not damaging something.

I would check the nut, gear and bearing on the end of the transmission input shaft, the bottom of the 3 transfer gears between the clutch and transmission

Are you sure, it`s not the "chirping" sound of your exhaust tips
due to the degrading damping material behind the mesh structure ?

    had the same problem...
sounded like a turbo....only under load, only under accelaration
put on an aftermarket exhaust...whining sound gone ;)

I dont THINK so....but thats something I've never considered/heard of before. This came on very suddenly....one day it was fine....next day it was whining.

I have been told the same thing about the exhaust tips. The mechanic that I had taken it to had worked in the Long Beach dealership in the 80s and had actually worked on my car which was originally sold by the dealership (the car is now in GA). I had him check everything trying to find the whining noise and he came back telling me it was in excellent shape. I was disappointed but as I was leaving he said "you might want to replace the exhaust, the fiberglass packing eventually breaks down and causes a whistling noise under acceleration, other than that your car is fine". I haven't replaced the exhaust yet, but the more I listen to it, the more convinced I am that the explanation is accurate. It sounds exactly like a turbo spooling up....

Gonzo, are you sure it's not alternator bearings going out??

Myles my bet is it has something to do with the bearing/output shaft after the clutch job. Did you replace the bearings on the transfer gears . Something is either not torqued up or the bearing is on it's way out. The 100 or so miles has given it time to wear . It sound like the gears are not meshing the same as they were before which is causing the whine. Pull the transfer gear cover and look at the bearings and transfer gears.

I'm assuming you filled your gearbox via the drop gear housing and not via the upper gear box fill point???

Im suspect of the muffler idea...this came on suddenly...good point on the alternator...will check the transfer case gears, and yes it was filled fromt he top of the transfer case not the from the side hole in the transmission itself. Will keep you guys posted. Thank you all for your thoughts....

If the idler gear is flipped during reassembly it will whine. I did that during a clutch change a terrible whine that went away when I pulled the cover back off and flipped the idler gear back.

Good thought MK E . I'm think maybe the same . The whine came after the clutch change so I would rule out all of the other areas and focus on the transfer gear and bearings.

Finaly able to get to the Ferrari today. Flipped the idler gear around and put everything back together....still have the whine :( Just seems odd that this hasnt happened in the last 20,000 miles and came on suddenly. Car shifts fine....switch to redline maybe?

Will pull the water pump and alt belts to eliminate this....but wouldn't you think I'd get the whine all the time with varied rpm....not just under accel?

Listened to your video just now. That is not the gear whine I thought you meant. That is way loud. Might be a belt not running true. More to the side than in the center. Moving to side under load and returning once the load is less.

Did it also whine when downshifting to a lower gear and during deceleration?

Yes. You should be able to hear it before I come to the stop sign when I say "decelerating under load".
