I have a question about checking the fluid level in the transmission. I removed the “filler plug” on the back of the transmission case to check the fluid level and it is fine. Here is the question. If the level in the gearbox is good does that mean the level in the transfer case is also good? -Skip VDB
I am not an expert, but I'm pretty darn sure the answer is yes, as there is a passage between the two chambers. When I last changed my gearbox oil (to MTL, FWIW) I poured oil into the transfer gear case filler plug until it ran out of the plug on the side of the gearbox.
Yes, generally, as bitsobrits indicated, but the transfer gear reservoir is slightly above the main reservoir. When the gearbox is running, the oil will eventually splash around enough to fill the transfer gear reservoir (and some model have an actual gearbox oil pump), but you don't want the transfer gears operating without oil at all even for a short period -- i.e., the bad thing to do would be to drain both the transfer gear reservoir and main reservoir and then only put new gear oil into the main reservoir. If your car had the transfer gear reservoir filled and the main reservoir filled at its last gearbox oil change, and now you've removed the main fill plug, and all is OK there = the transfer gear reservoir is also OK/filled.
