Where do I start the search for my noise and fail. I want to take as less apart as possible, as I am not an gearbox experienced guy..

I have a whine when I drive and a horrible sound while idlig in netural. I found these finger nail bits looking parts in my gear oil...
Car shifted fine, but I noticed that the gear stick started to move around in the slot when accelerating or deacelerating.

So what could be wrong and where do I start?

BTW. From what I have been able to see thru the hole in the end and thru the inspection plate, all gears look good.

Hi Lars - As far as inspection, I'd start by removing the side covers on both sides (see red circle on this pic). Take a look to see if your ring nuts are tight and "staked down". I've attached a pic below of what mine looked like (tight and "staked down"). Also... take some pics of the pieces you see in your oil, or any other pics of the inside that you can. PS - my first pic is of the driver's side, and the second pic if of the passenger side. Good Luck :)

Great, I will do that monday, and report back...Guess it is getting exciting now...

BTW, I stoped driving the car as soon as the whine got really noticible. Total I have done 100 miles or so since the whine could barely be heard, and the whine only got really bad and loud just before is was back home where it has been parked since.

You start before you take the gearbox out and listen very carefully from multiple places in the engine bay and on the gearbox with a mechanics stethescope BEFORE you take the box out. At this point you can only guess as the most typical failure and hope some other posters are right and it is the lock rings. If you are wrong you will be taking the box out a second time. If you want to take no chances you completely disassemble the box spec it out and put it back together with new bearings. I am pretty lazy and don't want to do a job again. I personally always take the boxes completely apart and reassemble, however by the time the boxes get to me it is pretty bad. There are just some things you can't see or spec with everything together. For example Ernie had a synchro that was in spec but when taken off the shaft there were big wear groves in it and it was junk. Remember that Ernie? Ferrari says if you open the box with fairly low miles like 25k km (I forget the spec) change the synchros which = reassembling the box. Personally I just spec the synchros and if they are in spec and look good I reuse them. There is a difference between a consumer acceptable result and doing it right. DIY'ER's already at looked down on my pros. We need to spend the time and practice the craft at a very high level.

I have whining sound as well.......however no parts in the oil.....just very few pcs harly noticeable.

The whining sound change every now and then why I suspect it comes from elsewhere and not the gear box.

I have checked the wheel bearings, but nothing wrong there.

More suggestions........apart from the stethoscope which will be shopped asap????

I had a simular noise in my tranny and it turned out to be 15k fix. I have a 348 Mondial t and the noise turned out to be a bad worn syncro that broke and jamed between 4-5 gear. My stick shift was also moving in and out of gear all of a sudden and then it threw out of gear so hard that the stick actually snaped. It ended up breaking a gear and instead of trying to fix it I located another tranny and had it installed. Sounds like your situation is alot different and there may not be any major damage which is in your favor. You would know if there was major damage when you drained the oil because you would find metal large fragments in it. I hope your issue is not as severe good luck.

Sure do, which is why I replaced them. But my gearbox was way far gone. I am hoping that Lars will get lucky and only have to replace the outer bearings and ring nuts.

I did check that is why I know there were some very diminutive pcs of metal.

Nothing wrong at all really.........just that whining........

I meant check the level of the oil. If the gearbox is running with a low oil level you will also get some gear whine.

The metal you found in the oil, was it the metal fuzz on the drain plug, or was it bits of metal.
