I was driving the 308 last night, and I'm starting to notice a little bit of a squealing (metal on metal) sound as I move the shifter into a new gear. Nothing too bad, but noticeable, and it definitely is new.

Is that likely a tranny oil issue, or can I just do something simple like spray WD40 in the shifter?

Do you mean the that sound eminates from the shifter mechanism in the cabin or from inside the gearbox?

If from the shifter mechanism, wiping a little lubricant around the inside edge of the shift gate with a Q-tip is no sin (and will help you from sawing the shift lever off ;)). Likewise, a shot of spray lubricant into the sliding bushings wouldn't hurt either, but it may require disassemly/cleaning/relubing after 30 years. Have you found the prior shifter mechanism threads with the excellent photos (IIRC, from either Peter or Rob G. or both)?

To me it sounds like the shifter itself that is making the noise, but since I've had the car a total of 6 days at this point, I don't have a lot of experience in diagnosing noises from the car. My instinct was that the problem was the shifter itself, which is why I thought some WD40 would do it. I just don't want to shoot some down there and find out that is somehow going to destroy the tranny, or something equally stupid.

    Welcome to "fettling" ;)

Nothing that you can really hurt in the shifter mechanism -- post #9 from Peter in this thread has some good photos:

    http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/technical-q/206790-308gtb-shifter-problems-3.html

showing the situation. The steel U-shaft that slides fore-aft just runs in bores in the (soft) Aluminum material so, if that's got a little torn up, there might be some debris that just adding a thin lubricant won't help -- but no harm at all IMO trying that first to see if it helps.

PS if you ever do disassembly it, don't get the two Aluminum halves flipped around -- it's line-bored when assembled

Thanks for the link, I have a better understanding of what I'm dealing with now. As long as the WD40 doesn't somehow wash away the grease that is still left in there, I think you're right... it wouldn't hurt to try.

Matt that noise is the shifter itself rubbing as it goes through the shift gate. The gear box oil in the car is fresh, remember I did a shift shaft seal on it and replaced the shift forks.
