As the thread title suggests, I have had my gear box and motor mounts replaced on my 2005 360 Spider.

Being as how I know nothing of mechanics beyond I need a charged battery and gasoline to make the car go (hey, at least I admit it :D ), my question is: is there any overlap in labor when doing these two jobs at the same time, or are they truly 2 separate operations with no savings in labor by having them done at the same time?

The dealership is telling me there is no overlap and is charging me full hours for each procedure (10.00hrs for the motor mounts and 10.10hrs for the gearbox). Being as how they could tell me the parts have to be special ordered from Mars and I wouldn't know better, I thought I'd ask those in the know here. Not saying I distrust the dealership, but not saying I trust them implicitly either. Trust but verify I guess is the idea.

    Thanks for the input.

Coming from an un-involved dealership, I can tell you that I do not see where the " cross-over " labor would be , with exception that the car is already in the bay for one or the other.
Oh and the underbody panel will be removed for either job.

BTW, you couldnt do them at the same time, as one or the other needs to be in place to hold the driveline in the car.

You may ask them for a break if you do both at the same time, vs 2 different visits, since theres no advatange to doing them both at once... < wink >

Not a lot of saving apart from the 1 labor r&i time for undertray...

Yup, as above, the under floor really is the only common bit of work and I feel you should at least get credit for that.

I am surprised however that the labour hours for both are effectively the same. I would have thought that there was quite a bit more time involved in the gearbox mount. I've not had to do the engine mounts myself but I would have thought it could be accomplished a lot quicker than the main gearbox mount.

Hang on....TEN hours for motor mounts? TEN hours for gearbox mount?
    1.00 remove and refit undertray.
1.00 per side remove and renew engine mount.
4.00 renew top gearbox bush. (inc.r&i airbox and silencer)

I'd call that a seven hour job......

20 hours seems a long time especially when a clutch change books at 10 hours (give or take).

5 hours if being done by the home experts around here...........

I would probably charge 10 for all.

Thanks for the input everyone. Just wanted to make sure... as I said, trust but verify.

As to the book hours, yeah, dealerships soak you every time on those. Sadly, I have yet to find a good independent wrench on my coast. There are lots on FLA east coast, but the west coast seems a bit bereft of good independents in my area.
