Well as I am waiting for the tappet shims to come in I may as well start asking about other issues. I find FC to be the most knowledgeable forum out there. Anyway, as I drained the engine and gearbox I observed that the gear oil was pinkish and milky. This is not what I am used to seeing but then again this is my first Fcar. Any feedback about this? Thanks AGAIN, Lostbowl

Bluish is Swepco. Reddish is Redline. Pinkish, well, pepto bismol?

Is there engine oil in your gear oil? Hard to tell, I suppose.

Send a sample to Blackstone lab and they will tell you exactly what it is, $20.

I do this with every oil change and every gearbox oil change.

Are there any symptoms of trouble?

If not, refill it and drive it.

    Thanks guys,
I like the idea of having it tested but I did dispose of it already! I put Blackstone into my favs and will send it next time. I am not having any trouble, in fact from what I read I don't suffer from the same 2nd gear problems that I read about so I will refill and drive it. My suspicion is that the car has sat so long that condensation collected and caused the milky condition but again I am learning about these fine machines. Thanks for the reply , I'm sure there will be allot more questions as I put the engine back in. lostbowl

What exactly is the difference between gear-box oil and transmission fluid?

    Gearbox-oil just sounds fancy.

Gear box oil is used to described the thick 80-90 stuff that manual boxes require.
Transmission fluid is used to describe the pinkish thin oil that moden automatic slush boxes use.

At least, that is how it works in my mind. Your mileage may vary.
