I've searched for this and the consensus seems to be that the torque specified for the drain plug of the engine oil in the workshop manual is too high (75Nm for the 360). The torque specified for the gearbox oil drain plug is also 75Nm, so I guess this is too high as well.

What do you think should be the correct torque value? I have found Mozella's recent post who chose 50 Nm. Any opinions? What value do you use?

    Thanks!

You are absolutely correct when you say "chose". I must have used a torque wrench sometime in the distant past on an oil drain plug, but I really don't remember it. I've put in countless drain plugs with an ordinary wrench, socket, hex wrench, etc. without a torque wrench and I've never had one fall out. I think I may have used a torque wrench on my old Porsche, but I'm not sure.

All I know is that 75nm is scary tight for such a plug going into an alloy part, especially when fixing a stripped oil sump or transmission case involves robbing a bank as step one.

The 50nm figure is nothing more than a guess on my part, so use that figure at your own risk. I can say that the drain plug hasn't fallen out yet, but that's true many many times over if you go back to my first home built go-kart powered when I replaced the two stroke Maytag washing machine engine with a Briggs and Stratton four stroke.

About this tight..."errrummmm that's kindaaaaa yeeeeeap it's on about right". I think it's about "man, that probably won't leak and certainly won't come off - ft lbs" Use something smaller so you don't overdo it too.

Thanks guys, yes I did get the feeling that most people would just "feel" what the right torque is without a torque wrench, but I was just curious if anyone had thought of "measuring" that feeling.

In these type of situations I tighten up with a rachet until the plug nips up and then add a 1/4 of a turn.

My mantra: tight enough that it doesn't leak and not a newton meter tighter.

Don't have an 360 but I've heard of too many stripped aluminum oil pans. I always torque with a torque wrench. That said if it feels too tight I will adjust down the amount of torque. I also use a paint pen and write the torque amount on the oil pan so I don't have to look it up. No one knows its there except me and I don't strip anything.

Not just too high, completely wrong. You will strip the plug, not too common to strip the pan on a 360 but the plug goes pretty easily.

There are two plugs for engine oil. Using the Ricambi parts terminology, they are called "Oil Outlet Plug" and "Magnetic Drain Plug."

I torque the Oil Outlet Plug to spec (~55 lb*ft) but have been using 20 lb*ft for the Magnetic Drain Plug. No leaks, but I don't push my car very hard.

I've attached a document (at very bottom of this message) that might be helpful. It has three sheets; the last sheet lists fastener sizes and torque specs, and links to other posts.

75 Nm is way too high. All you need is enough to crush the copper washer I use 20 lb-ft (same as Black360 uses)
