As written in an earlier post, I just purchased a QP 1 serie 1 a couple of days ago. One of the fun things is to read and learn as much as possible about the car. At thecarnuts excellent website there is an ownersmanual that I've tried to study in detail even though it is in Italian.
Here it shows that there were two different gearboxes. One for the 4.2 with the reverse down right, and one for the 4.7 with the reverse up to the left.

So why does my 4.2L car have a gearbox with the reverse up to the left?

Because they figured out pretty quickly that no one wanted either a 6 cylinder Qporte/Mexico or a fragile 5 speed that was designed for a 6 behind a V8. The big 5 speed (which is actually a 4 speed with a piece and a gear added on - also found in Astons, Isos, etc.) became standard for all V8s almost immediately. The brochures must have been printed early on.
Look on his site for a 4.2 Mexico owners manual in English and use that instead. Mostly the same except for the dash stuff.
