I attended a bachelor party a few weeks ago. The group met in a hotel room, had some beers, and then went bar hopping. One of the guys, the one who brought the beer to the hotel room, works for the State of Texas.

This weekend was the wedding. At the reception, my buddy that works for the state told me that he had trouble with his debit card the night of the bachelor party, and rather than show up empty handed, he used his state issued credit card to buy the beer.

When he went to his supervisor to get guidance on how to make good with the state, his supervisor told him, "Don't worry about it."

But he still felt uneasy, so he went to the department accountant. "Don't worry about it, we'll call it a department social meeting."

    WTF!

How many other bachelor parties is the State of Texas funding!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Ahhhh...nevermind that could get ugly quick.

But in regards to your first statement, I do agree that seems a little odd that they just wrote it off for him and that was that. He didnt have to pay any cash?

Nope! His department wrote it off as some kind of department meeting.

I bet his department also owns a bass boat and a lake house. (pure speculation on my part.)

Except that it's the STATE OF TEXAS! That's my money funding all these "department meetings"

If it was a privately held employer I wouldn't care.

It's not my place to take it further. I made my opinion known to my friend, I suspect next time I see him he'll tell me he did the right thing. What bothers me is wondering how many "department meetings" his department has every weekend!

I completley agree with that, if they write it off that easily it looks as if it is done quite often. Tough subject, wish I could tell you more.

Evidently, your friend knew ahead of time that using that credit card for personal purposes was an accepted practice - otherwise he wouldn't have shown incredibly bad judgement by using it to purchase anything personal - especially beer. Hard to believe he had no other options available - like a personal credit card or cash - or even an ATM machine.

The fact that the state isn't asking for the money back doesn't suprise me since he still has his job - which, of course, after this he shouldn't, imo.

Reasons like this is why we 86'd giving employees corporate cards, there are 3 people who have access to them and it's only for opening accounts with distributors and purchasing company equipment, they should never leave the building. Everyone operates on their own expense account, on their CC, and get reimbursed with in the month for any work expenses. That is providing they were approved and have reciepts etc.

I wouldn't even fathom buying personal items on a company card, that would have me out on my ass before I even got to the 2nd sentence of the explination.

Note to self: Apply for jobs with the state of TX :D

Your buddy screwed up big time.
He should document his efforts to re-pay/make good, and the brush-off.
Then, get some $ back to the State of Texas.
Prosecuters have many names for this type of behavior--terms like 'theft', 'mis-appropriation of public funds', etc. are the ones that first come to mind.
